Default Project: Risk vs. Reward

So after many years away, and when things were known as PR.. I did a mod project.
I was a newbie and just learning. After 4 years with the same rig, I decided it was time to tinker. Especially since tax time was good to me this year.

This isn't so much of a mod project.. I realized I'm much better at performance than looks.
For the time being, this project is just about how much stress I can put of this new system without killing it.

So on with the show.

The parts are as follows.

Asus Rampage Formula X48 Mobo.
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400.
Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme 6 Heatpipe w/ Noctua NF-S12-1200 120MM Fan.
G.Skill F2-8500 2X2GB DDR2-1066.
EVGA E-Geforce 8800GT 512MB.
Antec P182 ATX Case.
Corsair TX750W Power Supply.
Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200RPM.
Pioneer DVR-212D DVD-RW.

Grand total of cost was around $1600..

There the parts, I'll be posting some pictures as it gets built.
Then the real fun begins.. OCing.

Good on ya for the Rampage! I'm really curious to see how the DDR2 can get tweaked ... there's a great review of what the BIOS offers for memory tweaking at this link: AnandTech: ASUS ROG Rampage Formula: Why we were wrong about the Intel X48

Still up in the air if I want to go DDR2 or DDR3 for my impending new build.

You might want to wait for a bit, there might be new memory coming out, im not sure of this but i did read something about the new ddr coming out, im waiting for the new ram to come out before i upgrade from ddr2.

Obviously, I was unclear in my statement: I was coming from DDR memory, so ... any move up was an improvement. (Actually, that DDR was tight timings, so the RAM I've got right now, while a significant improvement, doesn't exactly turn me on.) Anyhow, I went with OCZ Reaper DDR2-8500, 1066Mhz. Rather nice, but requires 2.1v which means you need to overvolt almost any board out there just for stock settings.
