My next from scratch build will be an attempt at a file/print server, called YodaÂ’s SMN (Size Matters Not). As usual I will be charging forward into (for me) unknown territory and therefore will have plenty of noob config questions. After I get it together and running it will then be on to networking, yada-yada "what do I do?"stuff.

I guess things that should be taken into consideration are what I plan on using the unit for. This is a home unit only to be used by 2 adults (one well into old fartondom!) using 2 desktops and 1 laptop. Along with the usual shared text files there would be ripped music, photos, and occasional video. Add to this unit's duties I would like to share two printers and a scanner with two other desktops & a lappy. The other major (primary?!?) function is to give me an excuse to build another computer and use a pile of spare parts I have floating around!

Currently here is what I have for components and will need yÂ’all to help fill in the blanks. To start I am taking the mobo/cpu assembly from BluHaz reDux.

Case: The "Hybrid" MicroFly is based on a MX6 case. I will be using its chassis but will be exchanging the exterior panels & front with DreamCatcher's MicroFly.

PSU: I would not think the PSU requirements would be all that great and have considered exchanging the supplied Ultra 600W XVS SeriesPSU for an Enermax ELT400AWT Liberty 400W I have.

HSF: I really haven't looked at the Sandy's stock cooler (currently using an Opty 175 stock heat-pipe cooler w/Tt Smart Fan) but was wondering if anyone has swapped out the 70 for an 80mm fan?

Memory: While I have the G. Skill as part of the components taken for BH rDx was wondering if the 2GB would "enough" for planned use. Have considered selling the 2GB set and picking up a couple of inexpensive 2GB sets for a total of 4GB thoughts?

Optical Drive(s): Besides a CD-R and a possible FDD what is needed?

HDD: Here comes the real noob stuff, I guess this would be the heart of a server? Currently I have a single WD5000KS 16mb / 500GB / SATAII drive and was wondering what else….as in an additional 500 for a RAID config? Also floating around is a 150 GB Raptor X and a Maxtor 250GB SATA150 (currently in an external enclosure I move between ‘puters). Do we need a separate drive for the OS and then others for storage?

OS: Another noob biggy!! As I just recently thought about tying everything together and using a server to do it I don't even know where to begin. So I'm "all ears" here!

The only other thing that is being considered is an adapter card to give me a couple of additional SATA ports as the Biostar only comes with 2. You've been helping me with that over at SATA II (300MB/s) PCI-e Only? I've pretty much narrowed it down to these two but still open for suggestions. So there you have it, suggestions and instructions will greatly be appreciated. Time to work on this will be share with life (seems to get in the way of things) and the rework of BluHaz reDux & DreamCatcher as all three will be exchanging parts.
