Default Project LCD Makeover

Ok this is just a small simple project. Nothing elaborate. Just a little something to give me something to do.

We'll start with my 17" LCD monitor........

With screwdriver in hand and just a couple of minutes later.........

Now before I go any further with this, I need a question answered so I can decide how I am going to proceed.

Could I connect wires to the backside of the power supply input, to power some LED's without affecting the operation of the LCD?

The arrow in the following pic is where I'm talking about.

The power supply for the monitor should be able to put out enough power to run some led's.

It's possible, though you don't want to 'over draw' from the current! I'ld ask Twizted if i were you! great idea tho and good job so far!

Yeah thats the reason I was asking cause I don't want to draw too much power that it messes with the LCD's operation. I know that LED's would just draw a few mA's, but I don't know if it would be so much to affect the LCD.

They should not effect the LCD.... Infact, the info sticker on the back should have specs for power consumption on it as should the power brick... compare them and you will probably have atleast a few hundred mA to play with which could easily power some LED...

For instance if you have say, 200mA to work with and assuming the PSU's output is 12V you could run around 18 LED's (6 series clusters of 3) using an 82ohm resistor for each group of 3....

Alternatively you could run 30LED's at 20mA per cluster of 3 using 120ohm resistors and have more... its all according to how many you want to run and how bright you want them...

**EDIT**
BTW... If you dont have much power to use.. You would be suprised what just a few well positioned LED's are capable of.. You dont have to go crazy with LED's to get good accent lighting

If you post the LCD Power consumption and PSU power output rating I can better tell you how to go about it unless your confortable with it all....

Why oh why can't I afford an LCD?! I can't wait to get out of school, I wanna play with nice toys like this too.

That paint job looks pretty matte, is that what you want or will you polish it up a bit?

This project has been put on hold. I've had a few things come up and won't have funding for a while.
