Default Weight reduction

Well... I just stripped the back seats, and the plastic bins that make up the "trunk" of my vehicle... I'm thinking it looks better as a two-seater. I'll get some pics of my project after I get done.

I should have taken "before and after" pics, but I just decided I better get it done before something else comes up (and I can't find my freaking camera!)

I've switched out my wheels awhile back. Stock rims were weighing in at 10 pounds per wheel heavier than the aftermarkets I put on. I also stripped the stock stereo (that thing weighed more than a brick) and CD-changer (I'll say collectively, 10 pounds after putting another deck in).

So, I've reduced my weight by roughly 70-75 pounds total thus far...

Ye me...

I'm planning on replacing a couple other peices as I get money that will reduce weight... car is supposed to weigh in at about 3200lbs stock.

I'm not hoping to seriously improve things by weight reduction, but the back seat was worthless to me as a pair of newlywed midgets would have been a bit pressed to sit back there. The plastic bins drove me nuts... so I figure this'll work out okay.

Anyone else trying to reduce weight?

You could relocate the battery in the trunk for better weight distribution and traction..............There's also about 60-80 of sound deadener in there that can be removed...........

I've heard about doing that... I might see where I can put it back there. Thanks HP!

You could take the stereo out ...
Seriously, the head unit, CD changer & wiring I'm sending Nev for his mini weighs about 10lbs ... you don't realise how heavy stuff like that is until you have to pay for mailing it yourself

Yes, and even the VR4 or Dodge TT weigh about 3800... AWD kicks ass...

I'm thinking about buying a new motor down the road, and just start tweaking it until it's time to drop it in. Rods, pistons, cams, turbo kit, the works...

Of course, it'll take me about five years to get it all put together, but it'll be worth it!

Change the hood to a carbon fiber one. Replace the front seats with some nice lighter recaro seats(warning expensive).

Also, not sure whats goign on with the exhaust...but borla makes mean titanium parts.

And on the hood idea; DS's car is red ... and the carbon fiber hood wouldn't match at all, IMO..

You can paint a carbon fibre hood. No one needs to know its carbon fiber...its actually better that way, painted. At least you dont have to worry about people who hate "ricers" wrecking your nice black hood. I have seen it happen.

For instance, my dads truck.
1994 Suburban.
Has the Chevy SS front grill wich comes in black plastic. Painted. Here
The carbon fiber cowl induction hood is also painted. Here

So his truck is part plastic, metal and carbon fiber...none could tell really by looking at it.
Looks pretty mean tho..even compaired to a newer Dogde Ram

Theres only so much you can strip out, and even that doesnt make that much of a difference. You said youve stripped maybe 70, 80 lbs. If you think about that its less than the difference between a full tank of gas and a quarter tank... Gas is about 7lbs a gallon. Untill you start replacing the stock parts with weight saving ones, someone already mentioned seats, and a carbon fiber hood, they also make trunks. With the carbon fiber you get about 50% weight savings over the stock, so that can really add up, but you're looking at $1200 or so for both... But with a red car, a CF hood and trunk would look sweeeeeeeet. I plan on doing the same with the neon once its oficially mine.

If I ever went CF, I'd paint it...

As it is though, I'm thinking of painting the entire car black or dark gray and redoing everything at the same time.

I'm planning on budget alternative seats. I don't need "I'm a professional racer" seats. My driver seat weighs like 150 pounds due to all the electronics crap in it. I've seen some seats around the $250.00 per range that weigh less than 30. Also, my girl doesn't like leather (neither do I really... it's f*cking hot in the summer, f*cking freezing in the winter)... so it's a good alternative.

I'm thinking $2500 bucks for a seat... a turbocharger kit (a decent one) is around the $4,000.00 mark.

I'm thinking I'm going to gut the car completely, and put it back together with new parts.

Motor mounts, motor, rods, pistons, I want to install an alarm system, new speakers, new amp, small sub, turbo kit, new seats, rerun a lot of the electronics, upgrade the tranny (I'm thinking of switching it from ATX to manual, but I'm not sure how hard that is... my car looks to be set up for it already). I'm thinking new front end (3rd gen conversion), lifters, possibly a CF hood, a CF plate for the sunroof (mostly 'cause it's too low with the insert in... and you need the insert to block out the sun when it gets really hot).

Also thinking about anti-sway bars, upgrading the ignition system, Brembo brakes and some other stuff...

It'll be REALLY cool if I can ever afford to do it... I'm thinking of heading back to college classes for a few, so it could be this project isn't a great idea later due to the fact the car is already discontinued, and has been for over 5 years...

easy way to take off weight? take off ur stock body kit, take off the hood, and remove all seats except urs. Then start taking out window motors, and water pumps, and see how much faster she is. If shes WAY faster it will be worth it putting money into a carbon fiber hood, and racind seats. If not, then you know your weights not the problem

The only mod I would do is to take the engine out and then push the car down a hill. It will improve your top end speed and save you on gas money.

Nah, at that point, the engine creates a natural weight towards the front, allowing more forward momentum.

Still, on the uphills, I'm sure you wouldn't mind getting out and pushing now would you...

You forgot to put light weight lugnuts on your list.

2nd Gen Probe owners who removed their side view mirrors increased their top speed by 1mph. HINT for Jdogg.

Just a couple of ideas for you. Are you planning on racing in AutoX events?
