Default A lesson in painting.

This is a mini-project for me to brush up on my spray-painting skills for my Choppers mod. My 1976 Schwinn Superior is past due for paint. Origianlly it was painted in the factory color Opaque Red, but the owner painted it black himself, and did a pretty good job. But it's showing it's age, there's crackling in areas and the original paint is showing through in some areas. So I'm going to touch it up and bring the paint back to life.

Short history on this bike. It's a Jan. 1976 frame, originally in Opaque red, but the owner repainted it. It has the original 27" Araya aluminum wheels that came with this frame. The Superior is one rung down the ladder from the Paramount, the be-all-end-all Schwinn road bike. If you didn't have a Paramount you went home. Lance Armstrong raced one when he was a litle younger than me. The bike shop I got it from had no idea what it was, other than it was a Schwinn. It sat in the Schwinn dealer for a couple months affectionately called the "Mystery Schwinn". So I did some research on it and found it was a Superior. Paramounts had tons of Camponalago racing components on them, even the headset was Campy. But this bike lacked the Campy components, and the distinct "SCHWINN PARAMOUNT" front badge. And it was too light to be a Traveler, as the Traveler was a brick (I owned one) compared to the Superior's 4130 Chromoly frame. So a Superior it was.

I purchased it for 100 dollars from the shop after I totaled my Traveler. And I promised to let NO ONE ride it EVER, and to this day nobody has rode it, probably because of the awkward seat height. The first night I had it I snapped off a 58mph top speed down the side of the Melbourne Causeway in a nice tailwind. I was shocked at the difference between the Traveler, which could barely manage 40mph, and this one which hit almost 60mph easy and with taller gearing would have maybe touched 65 or 70. This thing was a f*cking monster. And it only had ten speeds.

I like black, black is evil, black is sexy, black is mysterious, and black is the color of choice for this bike. I have stripped the bike down to the frame and sanded off the rough spots. This is really a touch up job, since there's nothing really wrong with the paint on it, it just needs some TLC. I also plan on getting the original decals for this bike from somewhere, although the original ones look too 80's so I might put a similar setup to the classic script Schwinn used on the early 70's bikes like the Varsity and Paramount.

While I'm at it I'll probably rebuild the braking system and derailleurs. For now, here are some pictures.

Is that front fork a solid piece or are the chrome parts actually separate but welded on or something?

Solid. The later 1975 and up Schwinns had two tone forks, where the bottoms were chromed.

I think I'd be more worried about someting more catastrophic like pushing the frame inward upon impact. Then the bike would be totalled.

Or taking a corner too fast and sliding the frame across the pavement, imagine all the paint scratches

But it is perfectly acceptable for a man to be pwnd by a woman, especially if she's h4wt. Now if you were to pwn me at HL2 DM then we would have bigger problems. Its a whole opposites attract double-standard-thing. Girl > Guy, perfectly OK. Guy > guy, men will go to ends of the world to make sure their d1ck is bigger and they can piss farther than the other men.

Your Saturday Guest Writer article reminded me of all the wonderful biking memories......and some not so wonderful ones too. Road rash, dodging escaped cows and things like that. So, I have to say thank you for that article and tell you that you're a bad influence...........I've ridden my bike several times this weekend and even with the new seat my ascii hurts. It's been years since I've ridden & my ascii isn't happy right now.

When I was a teen I got ready for boot camp by running and by riding my brothers bike on a 10 mile loop thru the country. My brothers bike was a rusted yellow generic 10-speed and not all of the gears worked right or something but I remember riding most of the time in 10th. I know it was generic cuz I was a girl and not allowed to ride the Schwinn's.

I had forgotten what it was like to feel the wind in my face and to hear the song the tires sing as they glide along the pavement. If I keep this up I'll have to buy a decent bike that actually fits me, my daughter's bike is too small. (It'll be something from tard-mart, nothing fancy.)

Now with all that having been said............you get this friggin thing done yet or what?

I didn't work on it this weekend, been busy as hell. But I fuxed the back end on Friday so I had to shave all the paint off _again_ and re-spray it. But she's close to being done.

Glad to hear you're back in the saddle again, when you're on the bike, you get plenty of R&R, Rush and Relaxation

Even though I make it sound like I race the Sting-Ray around town, there are times when you just gotta chiiiillll. I have a little place I ride, on the beaches, it's beautiful. Beach sand kicks up in the fenders, the smell of ocean salt surrounds you, and intermittent whiffs of suntan lotion too. It's so peaceful, just gettin' out on A1A and ridin' alongside the beach. Tons of hotties, everyday is like being on vacation. I don't even really try to go fast, just let it sit in 5th all day and cruise.

I've considered building a beach cruiser Sting-Ray with huge fat whitewalls.
