I believe so, but a lot of those subwoofers used primarily in vehicular audio systems require extensive amounts of wattage, in the neighborhood of 1000 plus.

Home stereo speakers generally run on an 8ohm impedance whereas car subs run on 4, 2 or 1.... depending on whether they are bridged. Most car subs nowadays run 2 ohm.
Not saying it can't be done, but is more hassle than it is worth usually.

Also wanna add that putting a 4 ohm load on a receiver/amplifier designed for 8 ohm speakers could and very likely would damage it.......

Yup, but as long as the speaks you are hooking up to the stereo have a higher impedence than what the stereo is rated you will be OK , although at a potentially lower output if it does not match.

Keep in mind also, that a car sub will not sound like it does in a car. Car subs are designed to take advantage of the cars cabin to help produce certain frequencies effectively. You may even find it sounds like total horses arse in the house. Go to www.diysubwoofers.org for more info on this.

Put 2 4 ohm subs on the same line in series, that will equal an 8 ohm load.

Make sure if you do this you understand the difference between series and parallel - series would cause an 8 ohm load and parallel would make it a 2 ohm load.........major bad deal. Its really not worth the effort for the many other mention reasons........unless you want to do it just so you can say you did it, I understand that.

i've done it a few times, actually with 200 watts, you can get a car sub pumpin pretty hard, see the thing is, most home amps are rated at rms wattage, not peak, as car ones are usually....i had a 1000w peak sub on a 200watt home amp running at 4 ohms, dvc, the amp could handle 4 ohm on channel a or b, but not both... most new cheap stereo amps only can handle an 8 ohm load, but if you can find an older amp (mine was over 20 years old) they usually can handle 4 ohm loads on one of the speaker channels...

theyre right though it wont sound nearly as good in your house as a purpose built home one would, different box design totally and theyre made for more power/less impedance
