Default Royal Purple motor oil FTMFW

They just started carrying this stuff at Autozone and the local car parts warehouses. This stuff is wicked. For one, it's actually purple. It looks like diluted Welch's Grape Juice. I figured I would try it since I heard so much stuff about it and I was due for an oil change anyway.

So 44.96 later (4qt Royal Purple + 1qt ATF + Corvette ZR1 filter) now my engine runs MUCH better. I used to have an HLA tick on startup, now that I switched to this stuff, it has completely disappeared. The whole engine just runs quieter, a lot of ticking and tapping I used to have has completely gone away.

For those of you not in the know of automotive performance, Royal Purple has been the holy grail of motor oil for years, it's quite expensive (at 7.00 a qt. here in stores and as much as 15.00 a qt online) but totally worth every red cent. It used to be you couldn't get it in stores and you had to order it online, but recently the parts houses started carrying it and all the AutoZones, Advance AutoParts, etc. started carrying it too.

Also did a belt change, this car hasn't ran this good I think even before I bought it, it still had problems. FYI the car in question is a 1994 Ford Probe GT with bolt-on's. Over the years it has seen it's fair share of track time and speeds well over the triple-digit mark, and over the course of the past few months I have been putting it back together and re-conditioning it to it's former glory. So far so good, all I have left is to find my freon leak in my A/C system, put the interior back together and get some decent V-rated tires and it will be ready for our last National Probe Owner's Myrtle Madness meet in Myrtle Beach, SC November 9-12.

So...how can you tell it's the Purple oil making your car run faster/better versus just changing the oil, filter, tranny fluid and belt?

Royal Purple could very well be all that it claims and more, but after spending that much dough on it, don't you think you'd want to see it perform well, and that could be 'coloring' your perceptions?

I need some benchmarks to back that claim up.

  • Reduces engine wear by as much as 80%
  • Improves fuel economy by as much as 5%
  • Reduces engine heat by as much as 10%
  • Reduces emissions by up to 20% or more

I had an old Cavalier that was near dead. My friend and I found some Royal Purple at a local company's discount store at an exceptionally low price (~$2/qt IIRC).
We changed that oil and let it run in the car non stop until the engine eventually conked out over 12,000 miles later. I swear that it ran perfectly until it died and it would have kept running if I hadn't forgotten to fill the coolant (leaky water pump).

I like Royal Purple, but for the cost I always just use Mobil 1.

FYI - I use 0w40 to which I don't believe Royal makes.

Wear Metal Test

Oils inhibit wear by inhibiting metal to metal contact of engine parts. To test each oil's ability to protect parts from contact and wear, FFR subjected each oil to a test of wear metal generation. Their test "indicates the size and number of wear particles for each oil. The higher the rating (larger number) the greater the number and size of wear particles," writes FFR.
