Default My new 8 speed toy

Well, I found this Walgoose XR200 frame in a bike shop, a bare frame and forks and handlebars and GripShifts, nothing more. It was in their scrap pile and was to be thrown out. Paid 20 dollars for it, took it home and it sat in my living room for a year.

Well after a day at Matt's Bike Shop in Cocoa...

Top of the line SRAM 5.0 rear derailleur and 34-12 7-speed cassette, mounted on a double-wall Weinmann 519 aluminum rim

2-and-some-change Fireball rear

Tourney 44-52 dinner plate off a road bike, mounted in a sealed cartridge bottom bracket.

The real making of a Freakbike, look at the crank arms, the left side is offset but the right is straight, both are 170mm, and the offset crank arm is a Suntour, but there is no difference in arm length. We had to put shims on the bottom bracket to get the 52-tooth dinner plate to clear the rear swing arm and the offset left arm was also used in place of the other Tourney arm to clear the swing arm, but don't worry, the replaced Tourney left arm went to my road bike, I stripped the left arm on the Superior a while back and it has been needing a new crank arm for a while.

Never had a bike with discs until now, what a difference in braking compared to the V-brake setup I have in the rear. So smooth.

And a final picture before I mow my lawn

For now I might make it my work commuter, it's quite comfortable to ride and the suspension soaks up all the big bumps but is still stiff enough in the rear to not make me lose ridiculous amounts of power. Thought about a rear chrome fender like on the Stingray for wet weather rides.

Was built by me and the owner of the bike shop in one day

You need to Pimp it out with some clipless pedals... Much more power. I always wanted to run some slicks on my mt. bike to see how much resistance the off road tires create.

Nice bike for the price!

I am seriously considering it, it makes the most ungodly clicking sound when I romp on it, I'm thinking it's these cheap pedals I used, because that's what I feel through the boots.

Another problem I have been dealing with is crank flex. I don't think the Tourney can handle my abuse on it. Whenever I powerstroke at 100% the whole big ring twists toward the pedal I'm putting down and I would say between the pedals there's an entire inch or two of flex, however zero shaft play on the sealed cartdrige. The crank arms flex heavily too, even more than the chainrings do.

The Stingray doesn't have this problem and the Superior never did and it had a similar crank.

I'm thinking I might be upgrading to something made for a mountain bike or an all-terrain bike, and casting weight and teeth to the wind for something bulletproof and beefy that can take anything I can dish out.

Imagine if you will a turbocharged sports car with 830hp, on toothpick connecting rods. That's kind of the problem I am having here.

Flex like that does not sound good! Upgrade the crank arms and maybe the sprokets. The clipless pedals add some wicked power...

I was stoped at a stop sign crossing a highway. Traffic was clear, I cranked on the bike, the chain broke, and I was tossed over the handle bars.. 0mph to major pain in seconds. But when all works right, it brings the power.

I miss my bike, parted it out and sold it to pay the cats medical bills. He is fine now though so it was totally worth it.

Can you not get hold of a nice reliable pair of Shimano DX? Id happily post my pimp bike up in a thread, although I doubt many others have pimp-bikes.

I havn't been on my ride in ages, its at my parents place until I find space to keep it with me

Cant remember exact details, but its a GT frame, with RockShox 'Judy' TT forks, Shimano XT rear derailleur and 2.1" Panaracer off-road tyres, about all I can remember...

The kickstand is there because the real speed demon doesn't even have a mount for one.

you can just paint a "fast" paint job on it so it looks like its going...but i bet a bike with flames painted on it would look kinda dumb

So I'm not the only person who bikes to work? Cool, I ride my trusty Raleigh FM8000i about 5 miles each way. Nice find there BTW!

The speed demon used to have flames on it, now it's just flat black, I burned off the flames during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere while racing some guys from our club.

The Stingray, do a search for it on the boards. There are enough pictures of that bike on this board to completely document the entire build on that machine from start to finish.

The 76' Schwinn Superior, weighs nothing, goes crazy fast 4130 chromoly w/fillet brazed welds (rare) currently rebuilding the drivetrain.

And of course this bike in this thread.

Back in my day when I was about 15 or 16 myself and a bunch of buddies built dirt ramps for their BMX bikes. I didn't ride BMX, I had a Mongoose mountain bike that I had custom-built up (which later got stolen, bolt cutters FTL) and I liked to watch them fly. We built two launch and two catch ramps, a 4-pack, we had a bench with a roof I made from stolen homebuilding materials (for those unexpected 10min Florida showers), I carved a berm into the dirt and we dug a huge pit and found clay which we put on the tops of the ramps which hardened overnight and made for lots of good jumps.

We made smaller benches in the trees, carved extra trails, our childhoods were rather fulfilling. haha.

It was all built in the woods in an old watering hole from the 30's about 6 or 7ft. deep and about 100ft across with two islands in the middle, it was a BMX'ers dream, the three hurricanes from 2004 killed it.
