| Who here has a dual core CPU in their system and what kinds of performance improvements have you noticed about it? I still have an old Barton and I'm not really ready to upgrade yet as I am happy with my system's current configuration for now. | ||

| I had the money to go dual core, but after looking at performance vs money vs application, I decided that single core was a better buy for me at the time. I just don't multitask at home enough to warrant a dual core processor, and when I do need one, I'll probably be deciding between an X2-5000 and an X2-5600 or something. | ||

I'm sure you'll be seeing this more often very soon. Quake 4 already has had SMP support for a while and most new games will probably be supporting it.

Most games will be supporting it -- especially if they are interrested in cashing in on the "free" marketing Microsoft will be providing for the Game for Windows branding that will "officially" be launching with Vista. One of the things that will earn a game Showcase status is SMP support. (By the by, if you missed the Shacknews story about Games for Windows, here's the link.)

| My original plan was to build a new dual core machine with PCI Express this summer, but somewhere along the lines I decided that I was happy with my current system and the cost for a new rig just wasn't worth it yet. I've altered my plan to wait for the quad core to catch on, which I've heard is going to start happening early next year. | ||

| Apex Techie Wannabe | i have a 2.66ghz dual core....i don't really know what the difference in my machine is because i upgraded almost everything in it lol but before i had an 1.8 single AMD and under a gig of ram..now i have 2 gigs as well. i can run as many apps as i want without anything crashing or slowing down. Before I couldn't run TF2 with AIM running...not sure why...but now I can and it runs really smooth. | |

Holy Dead Thread Batman! Actually to be fair this subject warrants a revisit, because dual and even quad-cores are much more prevalent now and support for them in gaming has increased. AFAIK, the following games support multithreading: Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 Crysis World In Conflict Supreme Commander Alan Wake All Unreal 3 Engine games Not to mention video encoding apps such as AutoGK - with my quaddie, it takes half the time to encode an AVI compared to my old E6300!

| I'm in the Quad-core club. QX6700. I see no good reason not to go multi-core. What isn't optimized for multi-core today will be tomorrow. And the more cores the better. The sooner you get there the better off you'll be in the long run. And if you have a game that runs better in a single core configuration, you can always disable cores in your bios and oc the Hell out of the remaining one. Just my opinion :-) | ||
