Naw, I'm not folding or any such resource hogging activities. The Vista install is only a month old. I'll have to have a fiddle with stuff. Is there anyone here with an 8800 card that can push 60FPS on highest or higher settings?

I thought that until I got my first real computer, a laptop with a GeForce 7800GTX. Being able to play Far Cry and Half Life 2 on maximum settings was an awesome experience, going from a GeForce FX5200. Since then I've had a real problem with stuff that I can't play at max detail. It just feels like I'm only getting half of the experience. But yeah, good gameplay is definitely better than good graphics. I played Stranglehold for about an hour and got very bored of it. Graphics were nice, but that didn't make up for very dull gameplay.

I'm an old N64 fanboy, so I guess that could explain my non-affection with graphics (ohh god the fog )

I highly doubt the studio that developed Crysis would want you to play the game solely for eye candy. I reccomend you play a game called Deus Ex. I have yet to find an FPS that is able to match Deus Ex. I want to bring up a recent digg.com article I read. Will Wright was qouted on say: "The Wii is the only next-gen console" I personally agree with him. Start back from the NES. If you look at every console released after that (excluding the current gen 360, PS3, Wii.), you'll see that they all did something new. They could all be considered "Next-Gen". Weather it be the showcasing of 3D games, or a new controller, they all did at least one thing new. Now look at games today. The PS3 and 360, and in most cases the PC, aren't really doing anything new at all. They are essentially just more powerful versions of the consoles that preceded them. Sure, the games they run look great, but when it gets down to it, most of them are just rehashes of already released games. The Wii on the other hand. It changed how we play games. It's appealing to a whole new audience. I actually have my Step-Dad addicted to Wii Sports right now. It may not look as great as the other consoles (Prime 3 looks amazing if you ask me), but it's the most fun I've had gaming since the N64. The point I'm trying to make: Look past all the eye candy in the games you play, and see what they really are.

Wasn't Crysis initially intended as a tech demo, but after the great reception it received, from it's graphics it was developed into a full-fledged game? I may be wrong, but I really thought that that's what Crysis started out as.... A small tech demo to show off the new CryEngine2...
Not that I'm trying to argue with you, but what did the average consumer (not us hardcore fans) see with every new generation of consoles that attracted them immediately? New and better graphics that made them leave their old consoles and clamor for the new ones. Not that I don't think the Wii is doing something new and different (which I think it obviously is), but NO ONE besides Nintendo has really done anything with the WiiMote that makes people go "Oh, wow...that's cool." Sure future games may make others turn their head, but it appears that those experiences will be from Nintendo titles... Don't get me wrong, I look for gameplay over graphics all the time, but I won't deny that playing a good-looking title w/ good graphics is better than a so-so looking game with good gameplay. Hell, if we as a collective whole didn't put so much stock into graphics then we'd have stopped making new consoles long ago and stuck with those kind of games. Innovation and such isn't exclusively limited to gameplay, never has and never will. New and better graphics are as much a part of that 'new generation' formula as innovative gameplay is. Once we all come to terms with that, the less fierce these stupid "My console is better than yours...blah blah blah..." Oh, and the Wii hasnt made me once think about how I play games. Sure, it was kind of fun the first time I played WiiTennis to hit the ball. Then I realized how incredibly confining that gameplay was (for that particular game). I hate that it moves the player for you... I don't just want to swing a stick...I'd like to actually play the game...lol...

| I thought the demo ran alright. I think the problem is that the UT3 engine is pretty great and so now we expect a lot. Even on medium it looked better than anything I've seen from the UT3 engine, but with a performance hit. I don't think graphics and gameplay are completely removed from each other. FEAR's combat would be much different if there weren't smoke and sparks flying around. Similarly, the combat in Crysis gets pretty nuts when cars are exploding and buildings and trees are falling down around you. Games today focus on immersion rather than Ms. Pac-Man style twitches and high scores. While I don't think it's better that way, I think graphics help the immersion factor a lot. And let's face it, a lot of us are also members at PCApex, so I don't see why it's such a big deal to want to see your computer pump out some sweet visuals. | ||

| I'll try running it again later... :angrygame:furious3: Late last night, right after I DL'd it, the game was choppy and unplayable... I might have had too much running in the background, settings too high, or something... It still looked incredible, so I'm hoping it was just me... When I get home, though, plan to re-vamp the entire inside of my main machine, from the CPU to the DDR(2?) to the GPU (8800/8900?) | ||

The game shouldn't be choppy with your specs. But your framerate will suck. They should delay the game and code it so I can at least run it on medium. It wont stop me from buying the game, but come on.

It's gotta be one of those because the game is playable on Medium for me and my machine is just a hair worse than yours

| Funny you should mention that... I found an article on the nVidia site... actually I went and tried to use their beta "Driver Advisor" (or something like that)... Every time I tried to DL the latest FW drivers, I'd get a "no supported hardware" message when I tried to install... Bottom line, they told me the reason for the no supported hardware is that I need to get the latest and greatest from Toshiba (customized for Toshiba apps, yadda, yadda, yadda. So I go to the Toshiba DL pages, and guess whose drivers are from BEFORE June of this year? Yeah, my laptop's... Not happy to have to DL drivers that are about 4 months old, but if they work better, I guess I'm stuck with them | ||

Which is because the laptop GPU is a specialised model designed specifically for Toshiba. If you'd had a look at that link, you'd see that it directs you to the X-Treme G Mobile Forceware drivers which are specially coded for laptops, so you can use the latest and greatest drivers without having to resort to ancient proprietary ones. Give them a shot - I've been using those X-Treme-G drivers with my laptop for ages.

| I did look at the link, and thank you for it... I just bookmarked it because I had to run out the door to get a movie back to the store before I had to pay late fees... I'll check them out later on this afternoon after the Mrs. and the little Ms. settle in for a nap... | ||
