The AW8D board is an excellent example of an Intel 975X board with one rather big exception. Total lack of support for the new Core 2 Extreme and Core 2 Duo CPUs means that those wanting this motherboard are limited to the current 965 and below CPUs. As more and more Core 2 CPUs reach the market, replacing the 9xx and 8xx series, this means future upgrading is limited. During the course of this review I have tried not to conflate the performance of the M2N32-SLI motherboard with the overall performance of the AM2 platform. My time with the product has shown me that it is the best motherboard I have used in a long time, since my DFI LanParty nF4, while my time with AM2 has been a bit less impressive. AM2 marks a small increase in processor technology and is unable to offer any of the excitement that we saw with the introduction of the 939 platform or expect to see from Intel's Core 2 Duo. No matter what you think about AM2, these thoughts should not prevent you from appreciated the advances of the 590 SLI MCP chipset or Asus' ability to put together a great motherboard. The first performance chipset to provide native support for Core 2, is Intel's 965-Express series. With that in mind, we've taken a look at a high-end offering from Gigabyte. The GA-965P-DQ6 looks impressive on paper. Let's see how it pans out in our comprehensive review. With the launch of Core 2 Duo, eyes have suddenly turned to the motherboard manufacturers for a decent LGA775 motherboard. If you’re unlucky enough to already be on the LGA775 platform, there is a high chance that your motherboard doesn’t support Core 2 Duo. For others, all it will take is a BIOS update. But, as I mentioned in my Core 2 Duo article, some motherboards are being sold as Conroe compatible, but only with a BIOS update. If you get shipped a motherboard with an old BIOS on it, you probably won’t even be able to POST with a Core 2 Duo inside let alone update the BIOS.
