A modular power supply like the Sunbeamtech NUUO 550W unit can really make a big difference with the wire clutter that comes with a high end computer housing many components; and it also improves the airflow within the case. The cables provided are very nice, vary in length, have a good flex range, most are sleeved, two are EMI-shielded, and the Molex cables have nice grips for easy removal. On paper the Mushkin Enhanced XP-650 power supply looks to be an excellent model, but as with everything in life never judge a product based on how it looks. PCSTATS has seen enough computer devices that promise the world, only to go up in smoke when the going gets tough. The XP-650 power supply has a peak power rating of 650W, adheres to the ATX 2.0 standard and is multi-videocard ready. Our goal was to take a sample of the SLI and Crossfire approved power supplies and put them through some torture testing to make sure they perform up to our standards. Armed with a pair of GeForce 7800GTX 512mb video cards in SLI on AMD's new AM2 platform with a 5000+ processor and two X1900XT's in Crossfire on an Intel's 975 Bad Axe motherboard with a 965 Extreme Edition our core testing platforms are what enthusiasts are running. To top off our base systems we added watercooling, numerous casefans, a DVD-Rom and even Ageia's PhysX processor card. We put together everything we could think of that would simulate a high-end system with SLI and Crossfire then ran it balls to the wall to see what happens. What did happen was shocking, but expected. Three of the eight power supplies are worth avoiding and we tell you which ones and why. The TC-750PD2 has a 24-pin motherboard plug only, not the 20 + 4-pin add on style common with other PSU's designed to work with 20 and 24-pin motherboards. There is a single ATX 12V 4-pin power plug, as well as the EPS 12V 8-pin connector used for Intel based server boards. The main 24-pin power line is the only one sleeved on this PSU and all of the power lines are about 19 inches in length.
