This is pretty important news, more competition is good. Very good if you're on a tight budget

Yeah im actually rather happy that they are planning to start getting into the mainstream. Weather or not its top of the line, if they make a good midrange card, OEM's will flock.

Thumbs up

about dang time. i was just about to come out with a vid card called "beachbumia" with a r86 core.
(not a real gpu just a starburst glued to a piece of cardboard with a 80mm fan screwed to it)

this would be good for a nice mid range gaming rig on a budget...i wonder how these things will OC.

so im thinking by the price range that the first lin-up of cards are set to be on par or take out the 6600gt and 9800xt. that sounds about right.

Im honeslty quite excited with this news. I read that article through, and visited S3s websh1te, they seem to making good progress. They have some many links in the hardware industry, im sure we'll all be pleasantly suprised, especially if they start working closely with game designers.

One thing though, they really should change their logo. This just seems paltry to me...

Seems possible these just might attain simmilar performance to a 9800NP, but I dunno about the 6600GT.. Theres a huge margin between the two (with the later actaully proving to be about 2/3rd's to twice as powerful in many instances..) though even if it classes a 9700P, I'll be impressed.. Competition is great, without it, who knows the countless awful quantities of revisions (based on the same architectures) that a single, dominating GPU manufacturer could keep selling us for years..

S3 has surpised me in their initiative to push forward after their quiet period following the Trio 64 series of card - still have about 4 of them in storage (1/2 mb on PCI). I would really like to see some performance figures especially on their PCI-e card they have for buying on their site, maybe even buy one to see for myself.
