Default Affiliate Reviews: AMD Releases new 3800+ X2

Athlon 64 X2 3800+

Many thought AMD made a mistake by not offering this grade, but of course lines must be converted, and it makes sense to project numbers, and product the CPUs that will bring in higher ASPs. We feel the launch today of the Athlon 64 X2 3800+ is perhaps brought about by so many requests, but also a result of AMD having ramped up dual core production higher enough to begin supplying higher volume lower cost parts.

The 3800+ runs multiple tasks without issue as to slowing down, as would happen on a single core Athlon 64 CPU.

The new X2 3800+ comes at a value packed price tag of $354 US on the day it launches and it will of course go down as the market settles down after the launch...

After all, we argued, Intel's Pentium D 820 is a killer deal at just under $250, while the least expensive Athlon 64 X2 costs over twice that. Sure, the X2's performance might well justify the price premium, but we'll take more for our money when we can get it.

Today, our wish is fulfilled in the form of the Athlon 64 X2 3800+, a dual-core processor running at 2GHz with 512K of L2 cache per core. AMD has priced this baby at $354--significantly less than any of its other dual-core products. It doesn't take a Ph.D. in computer engineering to figure out that the X2 3800+ ought to offer a very potent combo of price and performance.

As is our custom, we compared the X2 3800+ against over a dozen single- and dual-core competitors to see just how it fits into the big picture. Then we overclocked the living daylights out of the thing, and everything went soft and fuzzy. Our heads are still spinning. Keep reading to see why.

Looks like AMD's official price on it will be $354; the $399 is just the pre-order price (right, I'm gonna pay more for the privilege of emptying my pockets now, then waiting along with everyone else).

The cheapest X2 at the moment, the 4200+, is still over $500, so this'll undercut it by a good deal. But like you said, still out of my price range.
