Exclamation Web News: Your ISP as Net watchdog

The U.S. Department of Justice is quietly shopping around the explosive idea of requiring Internet service providers to retain records of their customers' online activities.
Quote:

Data retention rules could permit police to obtain records of e-mail chatter, Web browsing or chat-room activity months after Internet providers ordinarily would have deleted the logs--that is, if logs were ever kept in the first place. No U.S. law currently mandates that such logs be kept.

In theory, at least, data retention could permit successful criminal and terrorism prosecutions that otherwise would have failed because of insufficient evidence. But privacy worries and questions about the practicality of assembling massive databases of customer behavior have caused a similar proposal to stall in Europe and could engender stiff opposition domestically.

I knew this was going to happen..since the 11th...I just knew this would be the first part...

HEY! anyone wanna colonize the moon and name it The Pimp? I mean...we could all have our own countrys and land..and then when the goverenment wants to colonize the moon we could say NO PAY US and make taxes...

I see backing all those logs as an administrative nightmare, especially for large ISPs. It would be interesting to see how the government would be able to read all those logs efficiently too.

Use the Find Fuction and set up a filter searching for certain words.

But what if an innocent person is looking something up for a project? Like gun powder? Or When bombs were first made or something.

As far as I know, no one is monitoring my net usage; no one cares what I use it for. And using p2p programs to dl mp3s isnÂ’t illegal. Making DVD backups is fine, even if your original copy is gone.

Comes down to health care and not spending money on getting people to spend money on cds. Seems like no one really cares, and why should they.

The US on the other hand has tons of money to waste on taking away freedoms because people with power are bored. Bleh sue me, wait I need to do something illegal

I used to be pretty fond of the states, but damn "land of the free" ...the title doesqnt fit anymore. And its sad, I find it sad and im from another country.

And for the record I support bush. But what does that matter...

ahh here Im not technicaly allowed to rip DVDS as that would be cercumventing copy protection. (UK) what a wonderfull law

I can't actauly exist without breaking the law in this country thats the sad thing . As a small child I was taught breaking the law was wrong but the law is such that I cannot avoid breaking it.

Also have you noticed most people are hapily giving away there fredom, most people in the UK support the new ID card plan they think it will make it easier to prove your Identity (whats wrong with the old birth certificate) and somomhaow protect agianst terrorists which I have never hered an explination of how.

I might sound parinoid but I am coming to the conclusion that the attacks on the workld trade center were actualy permited by the US govenment and many other govenments were in on the whole thing. Notice how quickly new legistation came in to protect us against 'terrorists' .

I have also seen the same thing happen on my way through the education system, at schools they always take away freedoms and impose new restriction. In my time in education I haven't ever seen a new freedom established. I think the worlds governments are like this, always imposing new restrictions untill they are overthrown.

As for bush I don't care about him, hes not actualy in charge he does what the people around him tell him to do, especialy his dad who still recives CIA breifings...

Another thing, do you remeber a big fuss been kicked up about the shipping off of US prisioners to countries that will tourture them. I expect 30 years ago the govenment would have been overthrown or been rendered incaable of ruling under such an unconstutional and treaty defying act.
In conclusion terrorism is a new imagainary fear created to kill dead our last few reamining fredoms.

Heh. Paintball guns are allowed in my school(Co2 tank has to be off). There really is no terroism aura here...where I live at least. Or at least thats what I can get from my surroundings.

But it really doesnt matter what "I" think, im only a spec.

eh, not so....my friend just went up there

Yeah i agree, this would be a nightmare for the ISPs to maintain records. However I'm all for a secure nation....I just dont know how efficient this would be.
