Question P2P News: Here We Go Again, Win 1 Lose 1

Music swappers win key court battle
Quote:
The music industry lost its quest today to curb online file-sharing when an attempt to smoke out the identities of 29 alleged uploaders was quashed by the Federal Court of Appeal.

Despite losing the case, music makers greeted the ruling with smiles because the court offered them key guidelines for next time.

The 27-page decision gives the Canadian Recording Industry Association a roadmap of how to present file-sharing evidence in future attempts to stop rampant music swapping. It also rejected the lower courtÂ’s ruling on copyright law, saying the judge was premature in his statements that file-sharing is permissible.

Richard Pfohl, the music industry’s lawyer, went as far as to call today’s decision “a complete success” even though the organization cannot proceed with lawsuits against these 29 people at this time.

“It provides us with a blueprint to proceed,” he said. “We know exactly what we need to do.” For over a year CRIA has been trying to figure out who’s behind pseudonyms such as Geekboy(at)KaZaA and Jordana(at)KaZaA.

Give Your DVD Player the Finger
Quote:
Researchers in Los Angeles are developing a new form of piracy protection for DVDs that could make common practices like loaning a movie to a friend impossible.

University of California at Los Angeles engineering professor Rajit Gadh is leading research to turn radio frequency identification, or RFID, tags into an extremely restrictive form of digital rights management to protect DVD movies.
RFID tags have been called "wireless bar codes" -- though they hold more data -- and are commonly used for things like ID badges or keeping track of inventory in a retail store or hospital.

Though RFID tags are usually read by a wireless data reader, the proposed DVD-protection scheme would make no use of RFID's wireless capabilities.

Rather, the researchers are interested in the ability to write data to the tags, which can't be done on a DVD once it's been burned.

Can't give DVDs as gifts - user wont be there to fingerprint.

Cant let my kids watch DVDs - wrong fingerprint.

Wife cant watch a DVD I bought - wrong fingerprint.

Cant watch my own DVDs - lost finger in industrial accident and gave it to a friend to add to his Wendy's chili.

This is SO gonna work. Can somebody get Prof. whats-his-name outta the ivory tower every once in awhile? Please?

These idiots need to leave well enough alone. I am so tired of the government or manufacturers trying to dictate what I do with my own property. I've never been a big downloader of music or movies. Mainly because I like having the original. I can look on my shelf and find the movie or CD just by recognizing the packaging. I find it comforting somehow. Why should these morons care what I do once I have bought their product. If I do something illegal with it than fine bust me. Don't tell me that I can't lend something I own to a friend just becuase they "might" copy it. Forget about giving it away or selling it sometime down the road. You'll just have to throw it away becuase it won't work except for the original owner. If you ask me it's complete c***. These idiots need to pull the rod from their you know where and smack themselves in the head with it. Maybe it'll knock a little sense into them.
