Talking Web News: Firefox breaks IE stranglehold

Is Firefox incinerating IE?
Quote:
The open source browser continues to make strong headway against the dominant player, taking about 5 percent of the browser market.

Nielsen Netratings this week said more than 2.6 million people (US home and work alone) visited the Firefox download site in March. The number represents a sharp rise from 1.6 million in February and 795,000 in June last year.

Nielsen's director of strategic analytics, Ken Cassar, was not about to ease Microsoft's pain over its rival's growth. He described Firefox as giving "Web surfers a simple tool that blocks unsolicited windows, is less susceptible to virus attacks and [through tabbed browsing] offers a unique means of navigating multiple sites within a single browser".

Give it a shot Pimps download here.

I've been using Firefox for a while now. I love it! Doesn't crash and burn like IE seems to like to do. It took a little getting used to. I will admit I was familiar with IE and used it often, while always hoping for something better to come along. Personally I think that something better has come along.

I'm really surprised that IE hasn't developed tabbed browsing yet. Even Netscape had that for a long time.

The one thing I missed from IE was that when you hit Ctrl-N, you get a new window with the same "Back" history as the existing window. It was a minor annoyance to me that Firefox only gave a window with a blank history. Then I got the "Clone Window" extension, bringing the number of reasons to use IE down another notch (I still have some IE extensions I developed myself that I'm trying to replicate in Firefox).

I haven't used that myself, but can't you build a macro to do whatever you want with those keys? I have an old Logitech Desktop Pro I still use (switched the mouse for optical, but I'm stuck on "wave" keyboards) and I can tell any of the extra keys to do whatever I want them to.

History window has nothing on tabbed browsing anyway. I run enough programs when web browsing that opening up a new program window for every web page turns my taskbar into undifferentiated iconsin a hurry. Firefox is king, smaller, less resources, more practical features... and more stable because it has a less incestuous mingling with the OS. I've generally found that if Firefox crashes (uncommon) you only have to restart Firefox, but if IE crashes (common) you'll usually have to reboot Windows.

I use it whenever I can but there are certain sites that just seem to not play nice with Firefox. I tried to take a look at ebay with firefox one day and no luck chuck, futureshops bonfire music site same thing and a handfull of others. Some sites, like Gmail for instance, seem to work way better on Forefox then on IE...So its about a 50/50 split for me.

Yeah, I tried a search on Jameco the other day, and wondered where the search results disappeared to. Turns out they're crammed at the bottom of the page.

me = In love w/ FF

Faster, smaller, lighter, better. My wife loves it too; she uses it as her standard browser. I like how when it's using SSL the address bar turns yellow. I also like the purdy skinz, tho I never use them...nice to know I can tho

It just does what I want it to do, and nothing more.

Still gotta use IE for winupdates and officeupdates, but going from using IE every day to only once a month...where do I send my FF donation check?

Only major gripe I have with Firefox is it STILL takes forever to load a PDF in it. Other than that I love it and have been using it as well since it was called, ummm, I forget what it used to be called.

Eh, gave up on IE awhile back. Always wanted to crash lol. However, there have been a few times where Firefox has crashed that has rattled my nerves. Anyways i still like FF better....wont go back unless IE7 really has new features and is a better product. Til then...firefox it is
