Default Say Goodbye to the BIOS

Along with its Elderly cousin the Floppy drive, the BIOS(Basic Input/Output System) could be going the way of the dinosaur soon

"For more than 20 years, the PC has relied on the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), a small set of fixed software routines normally built into a chip on the motherboard. This hangover from a distant past is causing more and more problems, said Mark Doran, Intel's principal engineer behind the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) that aims to humanely kill the antique technology. "

Whats so Special about Extensible Firmware Interface(EFI)?

"EFI promises to change all that. EFI is a tiny operating system in its own right, freed from the constraints of the BIOS. The first difference people will see is in the splash screen, the display the PC shows when first turned on. Unlike the BIOS, EFI supports high-resolution displays. Likewise, it can run with a proper graphical user interface, rather than the blocky text-only interface. EFI also has its own networking, so it can be used for remote diagnostics."

mm... sounds like intel wants everyone to have to take three hundred steps back to take one step forward... have to learn new stuff. Ah well, it could be worse... it could be all jumpers and no chips whatsoever..

uh huh, well its about time acutally. i was kinda wondering when they would kill the BIOS. I kinda figure it will be like DOS (Disk Operating System) they'll stop making it, and basing os' off it, but keep it around by changing the name to "Command Prompt". Just my view on the matter

A BIOS replacement written in C that can be accessed over a network... am I the only one that's a bit hesitant about that?

Edit: spelling.

Good point necro.... Me thinks IBM is hopping on the M$ take control of your computer, its information, and what you are going to be allowed to do with YOUR "personal computer". Shoot I would not mind at all, that is if all computers were top of the line and were free...
