Wink Affiliate Article: AMD enters the GPU market!

The new chip, codenamed Apollo Fir, has SIXTEEN, yes thatÂ’s right, SIXTEEN pixel pipelines. Throw in just about every damn shading technique and hardware feature you can think of and it would seem that on paper, AMD has just won the entire GPU market with its first chip.

They go on to detail that the planned 2GB of DDR2 should "come in handy" especially well in an upcoming game sequel.

And this my friends is why I haven't upgraded to an NVidia SLi system or an ATi R-something. I bet it will outperform ATi and NVidia and cost half as much

although something about this story smells of BS

It would be nice if they did enter the GPU market.

Don't take it too hard -- in your defense, you smelled something fishy even through the fatigue and the use 2 out of the 3 J-Dogg Magic Words ("3dfx" and "Voodoo", the other being "Schwinn", of course).

oh wow thats some dam fine news...and they certainly kept that under wraps. But can i get somin straight - they're using DDR2 with the video card? Or is that a recommended system memory size?

EDIT: Smell Voodoo?

Quote:
We’ve long known about the Apollo Fir as one of the AMD engineers is notoriously gobby after two pints and a curry, so we’ve been working on a similar system based on 8 R480 chips. To save space we’re stacking them two high in four piles on each board… we think that we’ll be able to push at least 24 pipelines as soon as the damn thing stops blowing all the fuses in the building when we plug it in…”

There is a 4th word, "Probe", now that I have opened myself up for a barrage of insults about the Probe.

If this is for real, then all I can say is hoooooooooly shiat. Wonder why they wouldn't just use GDDR3 on it though, as it seems to be a better choice than GDDR2 (but I wouldn't really know, just basing on popularity).

Yeah, I unfortunately have the same feeling. I mean come on, AMD doing videocards? and 2gb VRAM? That's not really plausible...
