Exclamation Web News: RIAA, MPAA, And Lawsuits Oh My!

RIAA Files 717 More lawsuits In January
Quote:
The RIAA once again mixed up the targets of their lawsuit, yet attempted to send a strong message to college students. The ''John Doe'' suits, brought by the major record companies, cite the individuals for illegally distributing copyrighted music on the Internet via unauthorized peer-to-peer services such as KaZaa, eDonkey and Limewire.

Among those sued today are 68 users of computer networks at 23 universities and colleges including Bentley College, Bridgewater State College, Georgetown University, University of Massachusetts (Lowell), Harvard University Medical School, Old Dominion University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Illinois State University, The Ohio State University, Ohio University, University of Kentucky, College of Mount Saint Vincent, Pace University, SUNY at Morrisville, Texas A&M University, University of South Florida, University of Southern Mississippi, Indiana Institute of Technology, Indiana University, Wabash College, Michigan State University, Wayne State University, University of Michigan (Ann Arbor).

MPAA files new film-swapping suits
Quote:
Hollywood studios filed a second round of lawsuits against online movie-swappers on Wednesday, stepping up legal pressure on the file-trading community.

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) also made available a new free software tool so parents can scan their computers for file-swapping programs and for movie or music files which may be copyrighted.

The group said its lawsuits were targeting people across the United States, but did not say how many people were being sued.

"We cannot allow people to steal our motion pictures and other products online, and we will use all the options we have available to encourage people to obey the law," MPAA Chief Executive Officer Dan Glickman said in a statement. "We had to resort to lawsuits as one option to help make that happen."

MPAA releases anti-piracy app
Lawsuits arenÂ’t the only things just launched by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America).
Quote:
It’s also released its new Movie Studio Piracy software to allow parents – or anyone else who gets hold of it – to scour computers looking for content to delete on behalf of the movie studios.

It doesnÂ’t seem possible they could actually get away with this, does it? But thatÂ’s Hollywood.

The application was developed by DtecNet Software, a Danish software firm whose chairman is, by an amazing coincidence, Johan Schluter, a member of the Big Music record label cartelÂ’s IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), and which also boasts the Danish Anti-Piracy GroupÂ’s Niels Bo Jorgensen as a board member.

And the ap seems to be about as @#$%ed up as the entertainment industryÂ’s attempts to regain control of what used to be its customer base by suing them and trying to kill anything which looks even remotely like competition.

That app that detects movies is great. Do they really think parents would use that junk then call up the MPAA to report there 12 year old son so they get slammed in court with the charges?

Lightbulb Ha!

The app is not about turning in your 12-year-old.

The app is about an "ignorance" defence.

It goes a little something like this:
PARENTS: "Wah! We didn't know little Johnny dowloaded 'Dude Where's My Car"
MPAA: "Your honor, we offer an application that will scan little Johnny's computer and identify copyrighted materials. We offer this free of charge and have advertised its availability widely. Parents are therefore either willfully ignorant, negligent, or lying"
JUDGE: "Yep they are. We find for MPAA. Parents - hand over bigbucks."

As soon as I retire, I'm going to be the biggest sharer or movies and music. No matter how many times they sue you, they can't touch even a single penny that you already have - and they can't touch a single penny that you get through your pension. The only thing they can do is garnish your wages, retirees don't have wages.

An example of this is the Civil Suit against OJ Simpson. He lost and was supposed to pay millions to his X-Wife's family but he hasn't paid a single penny because he refuses to do anything that would give him a paycheck. He just sits back and collects his NFL Pension while playing golf all day.

Now, I just need to wait another 45 years to retire - unless they succeed in raising the retirement age past 65.
