Default Free Money From RIAA

If you haven't already, now's the time to help yourself to a settlement check of $5-$20 from a lawsuit brought on to the music industry for alleged price fixing of music. Only the following need apply to collect your check (think of it as paybacks for Napster getting shut down):
  • You are a person (or business) in the United States, its Territories, or Possessions, AND
  • You purchased prerecorded Music Products from one or more retailers, AND
  • At least one Music Product was purchased by you between January 1, 1995 and December 22, 2000.

there will be no cash distribution to individual consumers. Rather, the cash portion of the Settlement shall be distributed to not-for-profit, charitable, governmental or public entities to be used for music-related purposes or programs for the benefit of consumers who purchased Music Products.

Too bad we wont be getting anyof the cash, but its still going towards a good purpose, istead of stiiting in the RIAA's coffers

If the amount is over $5 then the consumers will get a check, only if its under $5 will the money go to charity. Either way, your right... Less money for the RIAA.

I think the settlement should have been for alot more then that. How many CDs, Tapes and Records were sold in the 5 years that the lawsuit looks at??

Oh well, time to download some more MP3 .

The full paragragh reads:

The cash paid by the Defendants, after the payment of attorneys' fees, litigation and Settlement administration costs, shall be distributed to consumers who purchased Music Products. The number of claims filed will determine the actual amount of the individual refund but will not exceed $20.00 per claimant. If the number of claims filed would result in refunds of less than $5.00 per claimant, there will be no cash distribution to individual consumers. Rather, the cash portion of the Settlement shall be distributed to not-for-profit, charitable, governmental or public entities to be used for music-related purposes or programs for the benefit of consumers who purchased Music Products.
