Default Web News: Senate takes aim at P2P creators

Quote:
New legislation recently introduced by a group of powerful U.S. senators would allow artists and entertainment companies to sue creators of products, such as peer-to-peer (P-to-P) software, that "induce" copyright violations.

The Recording Industry Association of America welcomed the legislation, while P2P United, a P-to-P trade group, called the bill "horrible public policy." The bill could stifle the development of future technologies that could be used for copyright infringement but have substantial legitimate uses, said P2P United and other critics.

Here's something that our wonderful public servants in the Senate haven't thought of yet...

This would leave open the possibility for the artists to sue their own companies that also made such products as cassette recorders, CD-R(W) drives, and DVD burners.

Even one step further (although this one's a stretch), they could sue radio stations for playing the music for free which could be captured by recording devices described earlier.

I see this bill failing horribly in the House. If by some miracle that it does pass and get signed into law, the EFF will be one the first ones to contest it and it'll get shot down faster than the CDA did.
