Web News: Microsoft may be forced to Sell Stripped Down OS in Europe

BRUSSELS - European Commissioner for competition Mario Monti may demand that Microsoft Corp. sell two versions of its ubiquitous operating system, Windows, in Europe: one with Media Player inside as it does at present, and another with the music and video playing software stripped out and sold separately, people close to the case said on Tuesday.

Monti may also demand that Microsoft itself should propose "within a few months of a ruling" what Windows computer code it should reveal in order to make the operating system fully interoperable with rival software makers' programs for servers, which drive networks of PCs, one of the people said.

yeah i heard about that. and as much as i hate to side with microsoft...

That's complete BS. Microsoft can make their software as incompatable and obtrustive and user-enslaving as they want. If consumers don't like it, they can go somewhere else for their OS needs. Don't punish Microsoft for their crappy code design or forceful program integration. If they've got some shady business practices, fine, have at it. But this is just silly.

It's like calling up Honda and telling them to start selling cheaper Civics with no muffler so the customer can more easily pop on their new FartMan Pro CoffeeCan. stupid stupid stupid...
