Homemade Segway for more than half the price.

Not many people own Segways. Even fewer build them.

But build one Trevor Blackwell did.

"I thought everyone would think I'm foolish for trying this, so I actually kept it secret," the e-commerce entrepreneur turned robot enthusiast said. But now the secret is out. See his creation tonight on "Tech Live."

After about 100 hours of work over the course of one week, Blackwell emerged from his Mountain View, Calif., workspace last week with a low-tech version of the high-tech Segway. That's right, Blackwell built a self-balancing scooter -- by himself.

My Dad found a prehistoric Segway in Virginia City, NV

(actually, it's and old version of a handtruck (or dolly, if you prefer))

I read that when the batteries would be low everyone was taking face plants!

Ya, they were all recalled. It was a software issue though. Something about the battery monitoring being wrong, it'd misread remaining voltage I guess. People would roll up to a hill that there wasn't enough juice left to go up. When it wouldn't do it, they'd lean further forward trying to coax it to go. Then, the batteries would go, and they'd faceplant
