Modded 9500 as fast as a 9700 Pro

Well, you may have heard about it being possible to solder one resistor on the ATI RAdeon 9500 (Non Pro) and then flash the bios for it and it hit the speeds of a 9700 Pro. Here is a link that shows some brief results.

I am working on an article with a bit more thorough benchmarking on a modded 9500 to give you gusy some more results. Looks like a great way to have a super fast vid card and a great price. My article should be out by this weekend.

God-DAMN!!! That's some sweet performance, but.. hate to be the cynic here, but I gotta ask: What's the trade off? It's just as fast.. but is there somehting the 'official' 9700 Pro can do that this modded 9500 can't? Or are they pretty much equal in every sense? 'Cause if they are.. $199 is coming off my next paycheck for this.

yeah...just seems there would have to be a trade-off somewhere.

No trade-off... the only thing is that you have to overclock yoru mem a bit... but nothing dangerous. Other than the different RAM speeds the regular 9500 is the same PCB as the 9700 Pro except for a different solder between two resistors. Pretty crazy, huh? A simple solder and flash the card with the 9700 bios and VIOLA... you essentially have a 9700 Pro.

kewl, then.. I suppose there will be a $199-sized hole in one of my upcoming paycheks, then.. I'l give my Ti4200 to my GF.

Guys make sure you get the 9500 non pro with 128 megs memory, which is around $170 on pricewatch . The pro version has a differant pcb and cannot perform the mod.
GET THIS, this is the 9500 NON-PRO built on a 9700 pro PCB:

I havent done this myself yet, but Im buying one soon and doin the mod just for the hell of it (I will personally compare it to my 9700 pro)
