For my vote: Couldn't care less about the extra forum, I ignore trolls and don't talk smack, well except for about BA, but I can't get away with that in the Pimp Lounge either

TiZakit, I respect you very much, and far be it from me to disrespect your opinions especially since you joined PR a year before I did, but you asked for other opinions, so here I go.

Hell. I agree with every aspect of it... except for one. The private forum. Doesn't this sound like limiting information? I don't know... just something doesn't seem right about having a forum for only those willing to pay to get into it.

It doesnÂ’t limit info, but it sounds like you really want to get into the private PR club

You certainly are giving this situation “maximum exposure” LOL, (i'm sure you can see how this all works)
Just so you can put this into perspective, the Premium Pimp subsription is about $00.10 (ten cents) per day. You canÂ’t get anything like this for that anywhere.
Well TiZakit, I gotta wrap this one up, but as far as IÂ’m concerned, youÂ’re not an asshat, but I hope this little response helps clarify your concerns. Peace

You know what? I agree with TiZakit. Everyone who knows me, knows they can count on me to make a controversial comment. Of course, what good is a controversial comment without some supporting reasons? Here goes.

First of all, I hate popups, as does everyone. Every time I go to this or that site and a popup loads, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Sometimes, I may decide not to return to that site, or not to bookmark it. In PR's case, well...hell, I was here when it started, I come here for the passion of what we call modding, and the attitude of the members.

I *do* think that GK deserves something for his hard work on this site; I've donated in the past for no other reason than out of respect for what he does. No, that does not mean that I expect a subscription for free, that's not what I'm asking at all. It's the principle of the thing (popups) I hugely disagree with.

I have a pretty configurable proxy (Proxomitron), and I've already added the ad HTML to my killfile. I had to do this just because I come here so often, and I can't stand having to look at a popup every time I load a page, and I don't feel like I ought to pay to have it removed. I would gladly make a payment to GK just to thank him for his hard work, but NOT to stop the popups.

By knuckling under, in a way, (and this is only my opinion) we're saying that adding popups, ads, banners, and other web-surfing-unfriendly crap to sites is OK. It's maybe not unlike actually buying something from an email spam you receive. You're perpetuating and supporting it. (Someone must be, or else spam wouldn't exist...)

Let me repeat, I realize that the site cannot support itself, and that hard work needs to be done to manage such a site. But I don't think popups and force-ads are the best way to go about it--at least for what should be considered a techie site populated by techie people--who generally should HATE popups of any kind.

As far as the "private PR club" goes, well, no disrespect intended, but I really couldn't care less. People who need my private opinion on something usually PM me, and I do the same when I need someone else's opinion. The idea of there being a private room is nothing new, I'd say practically every major forum has such a thing, but I've never had much interest in it, one way or the other. My problem is that I don't think membership to such a "private club" should be bought; rather, it should be earned. Most of the people replying in this thread might disagree with my comments, but you HAVE to agree with what I just said in that previous sentence.

I think that I've always been something of an outsider-looking-in, with regards to pimprig. On the other hand, I've been loyal ONLY to pimprig. Never been to any other site since I finished modding my Charger case, and started on the Gargoyle case. Probably my attitude played a role in that, but then again, that same attitude is what I loved about the OLD PR site; it wasn't just me having that attitude.

Anyway, there's another example of my typical controversial comments. GK, you've done a wonderful job of the site and its evolution, but I don't much care for the forced popups. There's ways to get around that, but the idea, as I said before, leaves a bad taste. I'll contribute in the near future, but not to stop the popups, but out of respect for your work.

Cheers to all and happy holidays!

Coel, I've missed those long editorials of yours. I didn't have popups and most of the ads didn't load anyway because of the software I use. However, I gave my $20 just to help support the site. As an ADDED benefit, you become a member of the premium site.

TiZ & seal, I'd bet that in political terms I'm a lot pinker than you are, and yes, the whole idea of inner circles, cliques & whatever do bother me ... but not this one.

Before the "Premium Pimp" subscription, the only way up from regular membership was to join the staff, which was (& still is) a pretty exclusive club.

No-one can apply to join, it has to be offered ... and the only someone is considered is if they demonstrate an unusual level of commitment to the site, consistently post useful stuff, and don't get into any food fights. There also has to be an appropriate vacancy.

That's a lot of hurdles, so I'm glad that another level has been added. While the vast majority of those that have opted to join up are committed & talented, the only real commitment someone needs is to be willing to spend $20 for 6 months access, and the only talent they need is the ability to put their hand in their pocket. Whether a member is on the cusp of staffhood, or a winnet dangling on the rectal hairs of humanity, they still get the same benefits.

Maybe people shouldn't have to pay for that, but $20? How much did you spend on beer this Christmas? Or on food over & above the 2,500 calories a day you need to be comfortable?

As for what's in the private forum, you're not really missing anything ... unless you like being consulted on the options for PRs development, sneak previews of forthcoming articles, and topless girls.

ps Coel - I've never seen any popups on PR (even before I signed up as a PP), because I use a proper browser (Opera).

For those that care, I donated because I feel that I have gotten WAY more value than the subscription price from PR, the least I can do is to help perpetuate the site's growth in any way I can.

I will similarly donate $20 to GK in recognition of his work to give this site a place to live. The added benefit is a moot point for me. However, to be paying money to disable annoying popups is the *principle* I'm debating against.

Popups are a way of generating site hits for an advertiser. Forced popups provide the illusion (to the advertiser) that their ads are actually stimulating interest in the advertiser's crap, but the reality is, it's only stimulating the urge to click 'X'. Before I edited my proxy, every time I reloaded a page at PR, it repeated the popup, which cut into *my* bandwidth, and if you factor in the thousands of times every person who comes here has that happen, negatively affects the performance of PR itself...so we end up shooting *ourselves* in the foot, while generating this illusion of useful attention to the advertiser.

Another example of this is the rather recent implementation of the wonderful "sponsored links" used by sites like tomshardware and pimprig. This even MORE affects site loading performance, and who the hell finds anything useful from sponsored links, anyway?! It even has more insiduous side effects, like stopping the function of your scrollwheel until the things are indexed (which causes the browser to take up to a second or two extra to load the page).

From a techie standpoint (and we're all techies, mostly), shouldn't we be figuring out ways to make things better? Make code less bloated? Make the internet faster, reducing bandwidth and clutter, reducing load times? Technology keeps advancing and humans keep on finding ways to slow its advance.

Again, just my 2 pfennig's worth. No matter what my opinion is or peoples' reactions are, I still appreciate Gary's hard work and dedication, and THAT is what I'll pay my $20 for.

Coel, while I agree with what you are saying "in principle", the sad fact is that we live out here in the real world.

Those ads generate revenue that keep this site going. Nothing is free in this world, and keeping a site like this running costs a pretty penny. I am sure GK does this for love of what he does, but you can't expect him to come out of pocket for everything. So we sacrifice 2 secs load time to keep the site running, is it really that big of a deal?

I have said it before, but I didn't need a *reason* to donate to PR. PR has given me so much over my time here that I am happy to give what I can.

As far as exclusive content, whats wrong with offering someone a little something for helping out? There is no talk of modding in the premium threads. So its not like its site specific content that anyone is missing.

I wouldn't be telling me what or what not to do, CryoBaby. Even IF you spent $20 to get a little icon beside your name, when it comes to modding, you're in MY world. I think you got a ****load of nerve to even say that. I only hope your eventual contribution to this site is worth more than what ends up on my toilet paper when I take a crap.

Tiz: Sorry if it bothers you man. I pramirily set it up as a way to discuss with the subscribers some of my thoughts on future PR changes and stuff like that. I figure these guys are going out of their way to help support PR in a way that has a very real impact on the site so I wanted to return the favor. It's also a place where threads can be had with little to no n00bish interruptions. (I sau little because ANYONE can relapse into n00b-hood on occassion... myself included )

Coel: Popups? Not here, man. I ditched the popups over a year ago. The ONLY place you should pull popups from PR are on error pages (404, etc.) and in the forum archive (http://forums.pcapex.com/archive) which is just there for search engines to crawl and each of those pages are pop-Unders (the slightly less irritating cousin of pop-ups). If you see popups (or unders)anywhere else on PR PLEASE let me know. It is possible that there is some legacy ad code on a page somewhere but I would be surprised.

The one I used to get all the time is the "Pimprig Holiday GiveAway 2004". I turned off my proxy and I'm still getting it, could be a cache issue, but it's not a spyware or adware, it's definitely PR-related. It pops up every time I refresh or click on another link.

About the sarcastic noob thing...well perhaps, but after seeing that smiley finger-wagging at me, "I LOSE it! I head-fake him, flurry to the solar plexus, uppercut turning his legs into spaghetti, following up with a looping right haymaker, and he's DOWN for the count! He's knocked into the middle of next week! Is THAT "Coelacanth, don't Whine. You might get confused for a winnet" enough for ya?! Ever since, I've been The Champ..."

(Borrowed from "The Champ" radio skit)
