Post Lokie's Custom Window Etching Technique

PimpRig veteran, Lokie, has treated us to a "How-To" for the method he uses to create custom etched plexiglass panels.

Make you sure you give it a read. Good stuff.

lokie you should at bare minimum have a dust mask even when working out side with sand blasting matterials that stuff gets in your lungs and just starts tearing its way through

somethings you learn when working with bone grinders

Well monkey man, In a well vetilated area you would be fine for doing a window but big jobs, like a car, yes you should.
This no worse than a bad dust storm. This is dirt mind you, not glass, metal or fiberglass.

Nice article.

Do you find that cutting directly on the plexi leaves lines that enhance or detract from the finished project? I know that I tend to use a little too much pressure on the knife and was wondering about any lines that are left behind.

Other than the 90 degree angle with the blaster, how do you keep the paper from peeling back on sharp corners? The one I did left me with slightly rounded corners because the edges pulled back. Perhaps cutting directly on the plexi would adhere the edges a bit better.

Is the above possibly caused by using some adhesive shelf paper for my mask? I was working on some scrap plexi from a poster frame and used what I could find.

McDee,
I cut right into the corner to make sure the paper does not peal up. With this tribal design, I did use the cutting into the plexi to enhance the look of the tribal overlap. Up close it looks even better.

Shelf paper? Hmmm never thought of that. I have allways started with a fresh sheet of plexi. and used scotch tape to fix any errors.

The stuff isn't that expensive
at the local mega mart

5 gallon air tank $17.97 - no compressor, but you can fill it at your local gas station.

sandblast kit $21.32

air hose price i can't seem to find online, but i'm sure it won't take the cost over $100

At my local WalMart a 60' High Pressure Hose with Quick connects on both ends is $11.94 before tax... 60' would be kinda over kill but you would spend that much to go to a supply store and buy a 10 or 20 foot hose and buy ends to make your own and you can always cut this one down and buy a single end to put back on it...

**EDIT**
Oh and I am not sure as I have never sandblasted plexi but you may have to make more than one trip to the gas station if you only have a 5 gallon tank... (not sure of the PSI or amount of time a plexi blasting job would require)....
