Post Vantec Ion 400W Power Supply Review

Big man, BigAkita, has written a new review on the new Vantec ION 400W PSU. I like the titanium-looking color of this PSU.

You can read the review here.

I think I'll still line up for a stealth 520W...

Akita, good review... it does have one spiffy feature my Enermax 431 doesn't... that extra plug-in means those of us who remember pluggin' our monitor into the back of our machine can do so once again!

This may be a silly question... but those plugs built into the PSUs... Do they run off of the PSU power itself or is it juice that is simply passed through directly from the wall outlet?

I have never vetentured to use mine because I wasn't sure. =]

Wish I knew... if it was just passed through, I'd be jumping at a 520W stealth first chance I got... it'd be the ultimate lan party psu. You'd only need 2 cables going from your computer.. one power, one cat cable... (besides all the peripherals, of course)

Glitterkill, your Monitor requires AC power, the PSU converts power to DC... To use your monitor, it'd have to convert it from AC to DC and back to AC... I think they just passed it through

It shouldn't draw power from the PSU.

The power coming into the PSU is duplexed, one goes to be converted to DC (PSU) and the other goes directly untouched to the monitor.
Even though they share the same wire, the wire can take the load so its no problem utilizing it.

Heheh and I have one of those Vantec 520W with the extra plug and never used it... I will now, though. =]

Tell me how it goes, GK... I might base my choice solely on that plug. (The excess of power notwithstanding.... )

Sorry for the late reply, been busy today. Yes, it's a bypass...and yes, I screwed up. I should have taken a voltage reading with a draw on the external outlet. Oh well, there's always next time.

Couldn't you just do that now, and tack it on as a footnote?

I guess I could. I'll run some numbers tomorrow night while I'm doing a mobo swap.
