| So the GeIL package is good, better than unmatched -- but it begs the question: how does it stack up to the competition? I was all set to get the same thing (2x256MB matched sticks of 3200) in Corsair XMS flavor for $220-$225 from Newegg. Now that XMS stuff has quite the reputation, the latency is 2-2-2-6, versus GeIL's 2-6-3-3. So is XMS worth $40 more then Geil? | ||

| I am a diehard corsair loyalist, it will take hard numbers proving geils (or any other manufacturers) superiority before i ever change memory brands. Used to be Mushkin for me, but corsair in recent years has taken the top dog slot as far as i'm concerned funny thing, is ram is the only component that i am this way with. The numbers you posted are good though GK, i'd be really curious to see how XMS stacks up. NEVER scimp on your memory, just about any other problem is easy to diagnose, but i swear, crappy memory can generate so many different kinds of errors its not even funny. be real curious to see how high a fsb that geil can handle, maybe with a 333fsb chip with the L12 cut? | ||

For regular, everyday email & web surfing, you won't notice the difference. In demanding applications, the improvement is only several percent, but it's an improvement nonetheless. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but in short, the memory's only as fast as the slower stick. Which is one reason most of us preferred to have, say, only one stick of 512MB instead of 2 sticks of 256MB until now. But the new nForce2 motherboards are set up with a separate channel for each stick (up to 2), so you get a performance *increase* from having 2 sticks of memory -- theoretically, it'll give twice the memory bandwidth. So by having a matched pair, the hope is that the 2 sticks will perform as identically as possible with neither holding the other back. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| not sure whether this ram is worth getting now...I read the review and it go me hyped up...but the comments now make me think it would be best to go and buy a single stick of 512...just tell me which is best kind of ddrram that's out there for a 150 or less price range | ||

| The RAM by itself I wouldn't say it super spectacular.... above average for sure. The attractive thing about it is that the sticks are identical and geared towards a Dual-Channel DDR motherboard. If you don't have a Dual Channel DDR board then it probably wouldn't matter all that much to you. | ||

I've been a diehard Corsair fan for years, ran a 512 stick o PC3200 revision 1.3 i think for over a year now and never had any problems. In the last month I bought a Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo so I thoughout I'd splash out on a nice pair o matched 512 sticks sames spec as my old 512 stick. My friend has been running the same matched pair (1gb PC3200) platinum series revision 1.3 for about 2 months no problems. I install the pair of revision 3.1's i bought and I'm blue screening and GPF's all the time. Went through 3 pairs before I decided to get a refund after deciding the the ram's just not compatible with my new mobo. The sickner is my buddies pair of revision 1.3's work fine in mine, just seems Corsair have slacked a little in the newer versions. So I've been shopping round and am looking at the Geil and OCZ pair sticks, and I've gotta say the Geil are a lot cheaper and the reviews are not making me think much different. Good overclocking capabilities, decent standard timings and the new temperature monitors built into the sticks are a sweetner! But OCZ are unmistakenly an eye catcher but with the reviews I have seen I cannot justify the cost difference. Anyways I'll prob try the Geil so will post with what I find.
