I've had good luck with Promise controller and raid cards in the past, they always worked very well. I was looking at the 2000 card to slap into an inexpensive nForce2 board. Now I know how it performs.

i would say onboard is better, since the data can be transfered faster between the contollers and the chipset

personally i bought a ata133 raid card from geeks for $25 and enjoying it till now
