| Well, just saw this, Intel has gotten a working DDR3 prototype chip from Infineon Althought, it uses the regular dimm slot, it is a small improvement over DDR2, but the main difference is the chip making process, which alows for higher clock speeds at lower voltages Ars technica | ||

| DDR3 has been around for some time on video cards, but this is the first rumblings I have heard it will be out for the desktop soon. I was hoping to see DDR-2 dies off quicker than it is, it realy is not a great improvement over DDR-1 (Kinda like the Prescott P-4 being just marginally better with it's latest revisons, I'd still rather have an old Northy!) Smart money would be for AMD to skip DDR-2 all together and go right into DDR-3, but the roadmaps are sayin DDR-2 is next for them. Wich kinda sucks for us, since I think the memory controller won't carry over without some tweeks when they do go DDR-3, so u will prolly need a new Motherboard and CPU (Along with new DDR3 wich prolly will be expensive at launch!) to make the upgrade when that day comes. | ||

True - AMDs unwise move in this case may give them greater bandwidth, but at a cost of timings...If they were to release DDR3 support, they should at least tie it in with DDR2...IMHO it would give motherboard manufacturers a better variety of design...and while DDR3 may not be initially incorporated into the mainstream sector, the support would be there in preparation. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
