Default Broadband Via Gas Lines

BIG (Broadband in Gas) is born
Corante and the Red Ferret Journal discuss one company's plans to offer 10Gbps Wireless transmission of ultra-wideband signals using existing gas pipelines. The company's press release goes into only surface detail, but insists the idea requires no modding of the gas line. As specific as the company gets: Nethercomm "introduces signals into the gas lines using inexpensive equipment located at existing neighborhood network hubs and extracts data at the customer or business premises with end user-installed equipment."

Wow. "Hey, let's send electrical signals through gas lines!" turns out to be a good idea!

Nice link!

nahhh the worst thing that can happen is that time could go backwards and cause us to go back into the stone age, thus also proving that Cats will take over the world, and so will MACs....

whos the idiot who thought of this..electrical signals+ gas...comon..why not just strap C4 to the exsisting phone lines? lol

I dont think they are using electrical signals. They would be using wireless (atmosphere) to transmit the signals through the gas lines.

There is no electricity going though the gas lines.

NethercommÂ’s technology requires no modification to existing natural gas distribution infrastructures and can carry enormous amounts of data by simply making use of the entire spectrum buried within the existing natural gas pipelines. The technology delivers connectivity over the last mile of broadband networks without interference or degradation of other wireless transmissions. By not consuming or sharing costly spectrum, and not requiring installation of last mile cable or fiber, Nethercomm is prepared to make broadband substantially more affordable while increasing end-user bandwidth to unprecedented levels.

Nethercomm is currently developing natural gas, broadband and consumer electronics partnerships to validate and certify its revolutionary technology for use in existing natural gas pipelines. Simply stated, Nethercomm introduces signals into the gas lines using inexpensive equipment located at existing neighborhood network hubs and extracts data at the customer or business premises with end user-installed equipment which can operate seamlessly with most existing and deployed digital set-top boxes.

There's no oxygen in the lines to allow the natural gas to burn (it doesn't explode).

Remember the fire pyramid. It takes a 1. fuel, 2. initiator, and 3. oxygen.

This works fine unless a customer has a plastic/PVC service line off the main.
