| THis seems to be big chip news considering AMD and Intels dual core just got trmapled on by Cell. Sony, IBM , and Toshiba have released yet more details on the Cell chip. Set to be in the infamous PlayStation 3, it seems the chip has the following tasty ingredients: - Runs above 4GHz - 8 cores run through what must be a pretty well thought out controller. - 90nm SOI (pffffttt so? )- 234 million transistors on a 221 mm squared. footprint - Rambus designed memory interface - XDR Memory - 100Gbyte/sec - The FlexIO interface (also rambus) is capable of 6.4GHz - XDR is clocked between 3.2 and 8.0GHz ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() <-----the pimprig overclockers.LINKAGE HERE for Macworld LINKAGE HERE for....you know who with the exclusive picture.... ![]() LINKAGE HERE for the Inquirer LINKAGE HERE for Business wire press release. and... | Well, here's some things to keep in mind . . The Cell has been in development for 5 or so years now, so they've likely thought of every kind of overheating scenario and planned accordingly . . . But the fun stuff is this . . . Say you buy a Sony TV with a Cell processor, and then a DVD player with that processor in it . . . and then the PS3 . . . They will be using special connections so you can chain the systems together allowing all three processors to work as a hive . . . Insta-Overclock on the games, baby!! And the same will hold true of their workstations, I imagine. . . Buy two systems and you have the processing power that will shift back and forth depending on what needs the load . . . Way I heard it, too, is they wanted to make the communications WIFI at some point . . . and try to put the Cell into appliances all over the house . . . buy a fridge that kicks up your processing potential? Hell yah! | ||
