AMD Announces Technology Milestone with Its Multiple-Core Strategy

First AMD64 Dual-Core Solutions Planned to Be Available in Mid-2005

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 2004--Today AMD (NYSE:AMD - News) announced a technology milestone with the completed design of its AMD64 dual-core processors. AMD plans to deliver high-performance dual-core products to the x86 server market in mid-2005 and introduce dual-core solutions for high-end client PCs in the second half of 2005.

To meet customer and partner needs, AMD has been developing its multi-core processors for several years. Since the AMD64 platform was first discussed publicly in 1999, AMD indicated that its AMD64 technology would support multiple-core processors. As more solution providers join the AMD64 ecosystem, the industry is approaching the day when 32-bit-only systems or 32-bit-only dual-core processors will become obsolete.

this is going to be fun!

its seems to be a very swift move for amd to do - right after intel scrapped Tegas aswell - im going to sit back and watch from the sidelines for now, see how amd perform - if i were them id be trying to get my clock speeds up on single cores (to at least 3 GHz), or introduce better memory controlers.

im sure there was a photocopier in this little designing boom somwhere along the lines, or a drunk amd worker going into the rivals offices

Gota love AMD here. they dont want to be left behind ever again. Intel said they were working on a dual core design that will use tech off the pentium M line of CPU's, and since the 64 bit came out, Intel is just playing catch up.

And, I own a Pentium 4

mmmmmm, I can see it now. this time next year the norm will be a dual-core Athlon 64 variant with dual PCI Express vid card setups, SATA everything, water water everywhere (but not a drop to drink), and cases with 150mm fan options. yeah, that's the ticket.

wish some design specs would be released soon i would like to strart working on waterblock designs. From my understanding they line of thought is like 4 1ghz cores linked together to act as one. Each core is cool like a cyrix chip. this could quite possibly be a very good turn of events. would be nice to worry less about heat and more about pimpage

Any word what socket they will be using? I would assume 939, since the 754 is supposed to be a value line and go away at some point in the near future.

If what I had read on this earlier is true, you will just need a Bios update to use then dual core CPU's

Yeah, I can't wait for the dual AMD's to come out. I might be tempted to hang on to that tax refund check a few months longer to see if they are going to be worth it price-wise.

Mid 2005 is perfect for me. It is when I make the most money of the eyar, sometimes up to $900 per month. I am definetly hanging on to me refund cheque which will be about $500. Going to be a good year.

These do sound like they will outstrip every other processor, but i'd be hesitant to put too much faith in the Mid-2005 release date

Either way im happy because for those (such as myself) who prolly wont be able to afford the new chip when it comes out can get some dirt cheap 3800+'s
