i just got into all this over the past year but in that time i have added a window to a stock sony case and it looked horrible so i stuck a fan in the window dident help so i added ccfl to it, then swithched to a aftermarket case, then added new fans cut a hole in the window replaced 90% of the internals, and now i am building my plexy case for an old 386 laptop i have sitting around while i am waiting for more parts for my big machine.
here is the progression

Seeing as it was my first build I got a pre-mod of Dex and added some case fans and cold cathodes, changed the fans on the GPU and CPU to match and bobs your uncle.

I've got custom windows, with a spiffy etch on it, pair of blow holes, some lighted cutouts on the bezel, sleeved my psu, made custom hdd rack, some fans i had to switch the LEDs out on because i couldn't find any in yellow. Yes yellow, its pac man themed. I think that counts as more then custom window and some lights.

Most of my case modding has involved unsexy goals like silencing, reusing components, improving airflow, and eliminating waste heat.

My view is that computers are tools, and I don't want to notice them while I'm using them or otherwise cohabiting space with them.

True, but tools are typically boring and ugly. So why not beautify them, so they not only work, but look great while doing so? If I'm gonna have some tools lying around the house in plain view of everyone, I'd rather not have ugly, boring, dusty, grungy ones. I'll keep the ugly greasy-grungy ones stowed away in boxes in the garage where nobody but me will see 'em.
