Start with Intel .........no my first pc (if you can call it pc?) was the Vic-20 back in 1986

after that was

intel 286 16 mhz
intel 486 33 mhz switch cpu for the dx2-66 mhz later on & i over clock at 80 mhz (my first over clock) but not stable gone back to 66 mhz
intel P1 75 mhz @ 110 mhz stable but i was able to get 120 mhz it wasn't stable then (my first built)
intel P1 133 mhz
intel P1 166 mhz MMX (that was good)
Intel P1 233 mhz yes MMX @ 290 mhz (my sister still got this P1 running at 290 bean like this for 6 years)
intel P2 233 mhz @ 333 mhz
Intel P3 600 mhz celeron (f--- **** parckard bell) couldn't over clock that **** never bought these ****ty pc ever again i sold this ****ty computer & went back building my own pc , much better

AMD duron 1000 mhz @ 1150 mhz
AMD Athlonxp 1700+ @ 1.540 ghz (damn palomino) although not good for over clocking i like it alot good performance & for the price i paided i was happy as a clown.

Today
AMD barton 2500+ @ 2.2 ghz i'm able to get higher but i would need better cooling & some better ram to go past 223x11 2.455 ghz.

I'm pretty happy with AMD & if i spend more money for another pc i will go for the athlon64 so for me AMD all the way

How "old" is "old school"? Here's my computer chronology:

Timex Sinclair TI-85, 16K memory add-on module, cassette tape-loaded programs, TV as monitor

Apple IIc, 15" amber monitor, 5.25 (?) floppy built in, serial dot-matrix printer (I think)

AMD K5 133, then added Intel "Overdrive" 233 (WOW, what a DIFFERENCE! )

Intel Celeron 500 (Compaqrap)

Intel P3 1G (Dell clone)

Intel P4 1.8G(Dell again, I had a brain fart)

AMD A64 3200 (the one in Big Daddy, my first solo build)

intel might be more expensive, but you get alot more stable chip. Ive had both amd and intel. Actually 2 amd chips, and they both ran way to hot, and were very unstable. Have a 2.53 p4 and has been running smooth since the day i got it. Die hard intel.

It seems to me that Intel prefers speed over raw efficiency, that won't get you anywhere in the long run. Until Intel comes out with some new technology and makes there processors more affordable, I'm sticking with AMD!

I go with what makes sense to me at the time, I prefer Intel, but my laptop is a A64 3200+ DTR. My desktop is a P4 2.53, soon to be a P4 3.4.

I Prefer AMD it gives me the most bang for my GHZ and it makes a great folding cpu, also i enjoy the few perks like the multitasking Eg. folding and listening to my mp3's and fraggin the hell out of some poor sap!

Die-hard AMD fan here. I have only ever used one Intel CPU and that was on a comp my grandma got suckered into buying from some idiot at Futureshop when I was 12. I will never stray from AMD and wish nothing but the worst thoughts to Intel, the sooner they go bankrupt the better, I just plain loath them.

had a clocked 3000, then went to the 2.4C...was really happy after the switch. now i am still at intel, but my current position at work allows me to buy some more upscale parts, so i am thinking of a socket 939 AMD, but i am not going to make the change until AMD & PCIe are here...

I used to use Intel but switch to AMD because of it's overclock ability and price. I am planning to get AMD 64 for my next computer.

Oh man my first solo experiences were with amd. To this date I've cracked 4 AMD processors (out of 30 or so operations). I don't know if it's the fact I don't know my own strength or if I have beefy hands or it's just plain bad luck AMD chips always go fragile on me. I saw the light with intel. After going to a tech fair and winning myself a microscope, free t-shirt, and a free processor I was hooked . I feel good knowing I can stick a heat sink on there without worrying that I cracked the poor chip .

Couldn't care which side you pick because Cyrix is coming back !! It's just in the underground right now !

I do have to agree with LP, the integrated heatsink on P4's do give me a little bit more comfort, with a little warranty voiding lapping they provide the best (only my opinion, I'm entitled to it) contact for cooling.

I picked switched from AMD to Intel becuase my last purchase was Intel.
but I actually USE both, I use my P4 rig for windows, and ym AMD rig for linux, sense amd is better on linux as far as I can tell. and my P4 feels a lot better with windows.
-refer to sig for info on my rigs-

What I find funny is that there's more Mac users in denial than there are AMD users planning on switching to Intel
