| Apex Master Tech Apprentice | Windows Professional x64 is my primary OS atm, but I've been playing around with Ubuntu and I might just start dual-booting

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I'll stick with XP until I have evidence proving I need to do otherwise. It was the same when the move from 98 to XP occurred, I needed proof that the move would be beneficial before I took the plunge. However, the XP migration was very compelling right off the bat. Vista hasn't shown that. I find it interesting that some major PC vendors are now offering XP as an adverstised option instead of Vista. That tells me that the Vista thing is not going too well. That has to piss off MS. |

You had 98 over 2k? 2k, imo, was the best from MS. You sure did miss out.

| Sempr0n? | Where's the option "Downgrading To XP Soon"? I've been running Vista Ultimate for the past three weeks and while it's nice to look at and easier to navigate than XP, it's far too slow, I can't install BF2142, I can't overclock my new 8800GTS, my printer won't work, and there are still no DX10 games out. If/when there is any DX10 eye-candy out, Vista will be going back on there, but not until it can justify its existence.
Yup, Dell has had a whole raft of customers complaining that they don't actually want Vista on their new PCs, so they've had to bow to customer pressure and give people the option of XP again.

| PCApex Corr-Hoe-spondent | Currently using Xp Pro, Vista home premium and Linux By the way, have anyone noticed how fast vista searches your hdd's, not like xp where i probably can find what i look for (on my hdd) faster on the internet, using dial up connection....

| Sam-Hoe-rai N-Hoe-mad | I'm probably going to go to Vista just for DX10. Although I have Vista on a laptop right now, I use it for my classwork when I travel, and that's about it. I prefer XP at this point, but I'll call it "familiarity". I went with the I use multiple OSes. I can use any version of Windows, I like several Linux distros, and I've been wanting a Mac to play with for a long time. Anyway... my future will include Vista for gaming... but I'll probably stay with XP and my old '98 rig just so I can play all my damn games! It's getting as bad as a freakin' console to keep playing my old crap, I can't upgrade my hardware too easily! Linux, I still love to play with, but it's just not gaming friendly!

![]() | My main rig has XP and Ubuntu on it. My media server then has Microsoft Home Server Beta. Then my laptop has OSX and Ubuntu. I must say for my first time using OSX it's not as bad as i thought it would be.

Was that me or you talking just there? But you're totally right. Vista, functionally and architecturally, offers nothing that XP doesn't have. The 64-bit versions of XP do everything Vista Ultimate does--with a lot less overhead just to look good while idling. And Vista Basic is actually LESS functional than Windows XP Pro.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The unfortunate thing is that you have to accept the inevitable fact that you will change. I have no plans to, but if I want DX10, if I want compibility, if I want support, I will have to go new. Know what though? I can't afford the stupid prices that MS is asking right now. I can't afford the OS, and can even less afford the DX10 card that makes the OS desireable. This is one industry shift that I will not move with. I know I will have to get there someday, but someday isn't here yet. |

Do I ever hope somebody will crack Vista's DX10 so it'll work with XP! But then Microsoft will probably issue a "fix" for the crack in one of their Windows Updates...

This could be all just me babbling on, but this could very well be the reason why microsoft has decided to attempt to file a ton of patent infringements suits on SUSE users. Which I guess doesn't make that much sense seeing that it seems Ubuntu is really the bane of Microsoft. Not only is Dell still offering XP but they are now offering machines with Ubuntu installed as well. Seeing as Dell is almost single-handedly the biggest OEM machine vendor, it has to have had a few negitive effects on Microsoft.

| Linux Warrior | Yeah, Dell's in a tight spot... they want to serve MS, but they're getting all these requests from people for non-Vista machines. So who do they please? I'm guessing that MS will eventually wise up, and either stop selling XP all together, or raise the prices they sell XP at to Dell, to discourage it. It's amazing to me... apparantly Dell hasn't totally lost touch with it's customer base. This is a promising sign. Microsoft, however, has been out of touch with it's customer base for years. They think their real customers are Dell, HP, etc. but they forget that those computers are going into the hands of real users, and OEM's are just middlemen for the OS. I actually use a Win98 machine for gaming, since most of the games I like are older, and some won't even install on XP. |
