Default Doom 3 (its a bit late)

Hey I know its a bit late, this game has been out for years now and is starting to look a bit dated but I found it for £10 in my local computer exchange (CEX) and had to give it a try.

I was a bit dubious at first becuase although I remember the hype about it back in the day, the reviews saying the graphics were second to none and ultra realistic I have also read amny reviews over the years stating how boring and repetitive the game is.
But I decided to try it with an open mind and was pretty impressed, although its getting quite old the graphics were ok, certainly alot better than other games i've played from that period and the abiance of the game is almost as good as F.E.A.R with all the dark corners and ambiant sounds.
One let down is the less than well designed Menu system which seems to suffer from mouse lag and is basically boring to look at. The options available to configure the graphics are a bit limited but still better than some new games but don't seem to actually make a differnece in game, to me it looked the same at 800 by 600 as it did at 1024 by 768 and anti-aliasing did nothing.
This is solved by downloading a graphics update mod (available from the link below), this seems to improve every aspect of the game and makes it look pretty damn good even by todays standard.

http://doom3.filefront.com/file/Extr...lity_Mod;60626

I've written a file explaining how to update the graphics as the dude who wrote the mod doesn't appear to have very good english.

Overall the game is very good, with a great atmosphere and thanks to the mod equally good graphics its well worth anothe rplay if you've got it collecting dust on a shelf somewhere.

I'd give this a 8/10

CEX is amazing, there always dead cheap and always seem to have the obscure games that I'm looking for (Skies of Arcadia for Dreamcast @ 7.99)

I never felt the need to finish this game, but with that plugin I might have to give it a go one more time.

I got the game the week it came out, went home turned all the lights off and played for about 3 hours...

Loved it, I like how it is simple like the orginal and I think they did a real good job or bringing the orginal game to life with new tech.

Makes me want to play it now and try that mod out.

EDIT

so is cex like an EB?

I loved D3... I also got it opening week and my friend and I played it non-stop. I find the game very fun and still an intense game to play.

I gave it a 7.5 tops... intro of the game was amazing, but then grew repeditive and such.. the Shotgun owned EVERYTHING.

Best thing about the game.. I would say the misc demonic events... bodies flying, blood coming out of vents etc. ... and the way the demons spawned, that was sweet too.

I found it rather disappointing - like Quake 3. I wanted to love it cos of the awesome graphics and weapons, but it just couldn't hold my attention very long.

The Classic Doom mod meanwhile, now that was fun. Awesome to play a game in that style, with modern graphics.

Overall, I really enjoyed Doom 3. I don't know how you can compare it to Quake 3 Arena, that game isn't anything at all like D3. Q3A was mainly intended to be a multiplayer-only game, whereas D3 is the opposite, mainly single-player only. Q3A has no story whatsoever, it's just a ladder-based deathmatch (and variants) with bots (out of the box). It's really not much fun if you don't get online with it, while D3's main purpose is a single-player game. I don't know how you can compare the two!

I do think D3 suffered from a few cop-outs, though. Perhaps it was necessary due to the high graphical demands, but I really thought the way dead creatures "poofed" away with an admittedly cool fire effect was a major cop-out. No bodies lying around to kick at or enjoy the ragdoll physics! Just *poof* and it burns up. The effect got old in a hurry.

I also didn't like the "cheap thrills" that you got with the scripted creature attacks and lack of realism. For example, you walk down a corridor and suddenly behind you, a secret door opens and a creature jumps you from behind. You kill it and walk to where it came from, and that's all you see...a little box area. I guess the creature just sat there in it's box until a person walked by. The creatures who spawned in, that's a bit more creative and realistic for a game that has to do with bridging multiple dimensions. The "creature in a secret wall-box" or "demon suddenly appearing under the stairs" is a cop-out; it gives the player a thrill but it's a cheap thrill. I'm a horror movie lover and I hated this as much as I hate the "cat jumps screeching out of the dumpster" and "movie actress walking backwards in fear and buddy's hand claps down on her shoulder" clichés. Cheap thrills suck, they startle you but give you an empty feeling that makes you say "gee, that was lame".

I really enjoyed D3's ambient audio. With 4 or more speakers and a decent surround-sound audio card, walking through the various levels with their intriguing machinery was very immersive. The audio effects also enhanced the scariness of the game.

The boss battles were mostly fun and engaging, including the final level as you're descending deeper and deeper. The sense of foreboding was awesome!

Unlike most people who play a game for a few days (or hours?) and then deliver their review or verdict, I usually try to finish a game. I finished Doom 3 and it was worth it. Definitely worth a 'bargain bin' price if you can find it in one!

Lol, I apologise. I meant Quake 4.

I loved Doom 3, as well as the expansion.

Playing in my basement at 2 in the morning with high quality speakers and a decent sound card was not my best idea. Something jumped out in front of me and I actually jumped out of my chair while simultaneously throwing my old mouse at the wall. Needless to say, I had to buy a new mouse later that day.

I loved D3, However ROE (was like the reviews said) Repetitve. However That double barrel shotgun RULED!. I also used a flashlight mod for all the weapons, It was still scary but it helped. D3 was like no other FPS, It scared the crap out of you (Blood, Guts, remains are everwhere around the levels), but thats not the scary part, Some of the monsters Looked WAY too real if they got up to you. BTW, The monsters are VERY aggressive.

Hint: If a monster is after you, and your near a door, Go hide behind the door [well the corner] (reload your weapons) and close it. Amazingly, monsters can open the door, then you can just blast away. Also, Watch your flanks

When I got this game it scared the **** outta me. Just made me jump absolutely everywhere. The whole dark shadows thang made it impossible to see what was coming for you... all you hear is some groaning and you turn around to find some zombie all in yo' grill.

Fantastic game, and when it came out the graphics were unmatched. Still pretty good even by today's standards.

Also the first game I played where enemies could come from ANYWHERE. What looks like an inanimate wall, a solid part of the scenery, would burst open, or pipes would bend and something would crawl out.

I downloaded DOOM3 the day it came out, wait maybe before it came out. Immedatley i got the DVD fix for the CD's, to make them an all in one. I eventually bought the game the next week, knowing it was a keeper. With my awesome Geforce 4 MX440 and it great lag at low settings I still had a fricken ball. I was more disapointed in the Multiplayer settings of the game.

The trent reznor soundpak (if you can't find it, its in a thread here at apex, that necro started, search feature its awesome) made the game even better, instead of having nerf guns you have real ones, and people sound like they are dying alot more than ohh, ahhh, ugh.

I'll have to try out the graphic mod there, looks awesome as well.

Classic doom mod was the best. Hands down the classic doom maps reloaded into a high demension, totally awesome. And the guns ohh, it made me want to find my original copy of doom and play it for hours.

Trent Reznor Sound Pack

Trent Reznor Sound Pack, Doom 3 Downloads, Doom 3 Sounds

The flashlight mod Did have its disadvantages, ie, Less Brightness. I only downloaded mods that kept the game equal, but not having flashlights on weapons is unrealistic. Night Vision would have been nice though (even if it was the crappy green STALKER night vision- Then you would have to choose between a flashlight or crappy night vision.).

The Flashlight in Doom Bothered me.

Today, soldiers have flashlights they can clip to their flak jackets, so why wouldn't space marines have the same, or something better? After all it is pretty dark in space.

I think all of Doom III got repetitive after you got to around the plasma rifle (most fun weapon), but most of the time there would be shotgun ammo everywhere, and that was... well too easy.

And no, I didn't play on easy.

If they had put the Double Barrel Shotgun In Doom III (and not ROE), That would have been kick ass. You practically go through ROE with the double barrel. The Plasma rifle (for me anyway) seemed to run out of ammo too much...
