Default Review: Defusing the PR sock.

Packaging review - Nev_Payne

From the new Cent minting thread, JE was kind enough to let me know of his recent discovery of some good condition coins he was willing to see off. With eBay in one hand and my PayPal account in the other, I set about looking for the average prices on the coins, and/or nearest dated coin. After agreeing a reasonable price, the coins were sent next day delivery, and on Friday morning, the coins arrived....what I didnÂ’t expect was the following.

DISCLAMER - it is by no means my fault if your motherboard turns up broken/snapped/burnt/drop kicked/dented when it reaches its destination, nor any other piece of hardware. This is simply a demonstration of useful packaging tips.

I write this in the review section as a guide to people who would like some advice or background information in packing something for either delivery/rma/shipping that is not under your control. The UK Post Office is one fine example where packages are thrown, crushed under 500kg of other parcels, or drop kicked to the next section of the warehouse. So my fellow Pimps, to the bomb disposal method:

Dissecting the cadaver

The package came as stated on Friday morning, on time, in good condition; complete with PR Sock insignia...this package was not to be taken lightly. My tools are:
-Scissors
-Larger Scissors
-Patience

Using the normal sized scissors, the double layered paper was cut with great care, making sure anything underneath was retained as whole as possible. After removing the double paper, the 3rd above picture was seen. Those of you who watch cop documentaries will have seen plenty of these similarly shaped packages. The materials now consisted of heavy duty electrical tape, and double layered bubble wrap with small bubble size.

Standby positions.

The first 2 cuts were made and the bubble wrapping was taken off. Again, with patience now dwindling, a 3rd piece of electrical tape was found, and then a 4th as the layer was unfolded, then a 5th. The main sheet of bubble wrapping was removed to reveal the above middle picture. 5 tightly wrapped packages in an Ice Cream Sandwich formation with the 2 cardboard sections being the wafers. 5 celotape rounds (with 1" wide celotape) were visible, and those were just holding the cardboard panels in place. By now, gun loading sounds from drug squads could be heard around my house, with radio call in responses...as for me in my pajamas, there wasnÂ’t a lot to defend me from unpaid police officers. I continued with haste.

Enter the industrial scissors. The heavy duty tape was getting to my normal pair, so reinforcements were brought in to tackle with the desperation (and the drug squad; who were now trying to prize my door open).

The final layer of bubble wrap round the individual packets was removed, and tissue paper (shown right) was all that remained in my path...this material was holding the precious coins and their holders, preventing scratches, dents and tape residue from the coins.

SafetyÂ’s on...itÂ’s a dud.

Finally after 15mins of dissecting, the coins and holders could be seen in daylight. With all on display, the package was reduced from 10x4x3" to a meager 2.5x2.5x0.2".

Conclusion.

Packaging in a modern day world where delivery services are an essential when it comes to online shopping, and its counterpart - RMA-ing, and care must be taken. My appreciation goes to Jonny English for his master skills of packing items, and the Royal Mint for a fine selection of Crowns.

Overall rating : 9/10 Pimp hats - I didn't get a free gift!
