Default question about painting bondo

so i have bondo which completly sucks cause i didnt buy the right kind and did it anyway, but how do you paint it cause after sanding the crap out of it the primer wont stick it kinda like forms lil islands all over the place and its not even. also for you painters out there what kind of paint is the best for a smooth finish, i usually use the car model paint but it gets expensive when you use it alot, i dont wana use a spray can because its not the same as airbrushing, and one last thing where can i find blue body filler cause i think that would be alot easier to use than bondo.

To get the bondo nice and flat, you need to block sand with a coarse grit sandpaper. Once it's even, you can use higher grit snadpapers and start getting it real smooth. Primer shouldn't have a hard time sticking to bondo, as long as you've properly sanded it smooth. You can actually get very nice finishes with plain-o rattle-can spray paints if you take your time and wetsand in between coats.

I bought a can of Bondo Glass body filler from Advance Auto Parts. Good stuff, short hair fiberglass resin. Kind of an aqua color.

The "forms lil islands" sounds like you have oils or wax on the suface. That's about the only thing I know of that will cause it not to stick. It is a must that surfaces be oil free.

The best paint to use is of course, automotive paint.

All bondo (body filler) I recall seeing is the same color, grayish. It is the hardener used, that makes it red or blue.
And which color you use makes no difference in the quality.

good stuff man, thats the stuff im looking for do you have a name for it or like a part number or whatever anyhelp is quite appreciated.

The forming of islands is weird because the surface of bondo is cleaned with water and soap and just to be sure alcohol, its probably because i havent sanded the whole thing smooth.

Thanx guys your a great help.

I don't know about you or anybody else, but I wouldn't clean the bondo with anything except a damp cloth. Soaps and alcohols are probably what's causing the paint not to stick. Some effort and heavy grit snadpaper will take the "islands" down.

not to get off topic BUT can you sand that by hand or since its with it has fiberglass does it need to be sanded with a palm sander?

also sounds weird about both the primer try soaking it in water for a few minutes then letting it dry out in the sun, maybe the alcohol did something.

It is just ordinary bondo with some fibre glass material in it. (Not resin) It is used to fill holes, pretty much.

You could use some cheap laquer thinner to wipe it down, but dont saturate the rag and get it too wet. It can eat the old paint if you do.

You can hand sand it but it's kind of slow going.

Bondo hair, and bondo filler are both primable. As stated oil is really the only thing causeing the islands, and or too much paint. Remember that spray paint is best when thin coats are applied, many of them.

Duplicolor automotive paint normally is a standard in painting, not real nessesity of brand but it seems to be the popular choice.

i cleaned the plastic with the alcohol and let it dry not the bondo, i know u cant clean it with alcohol cause ur not supposed to, but yeah i think i might of fixed it have to see how it comes out when its dry, i also got some of that blue filler, i think it works a lil bit better than the bondo because of the fiberglass in it, i duno its by choice really, but yeah thanx for the advice.
