| I am gonna be painting a case I will be receiving in the mail soon and I was wondering if anyone knows if Krylon Fusion spray paint is enamel or a laqcuer based paint? Can Krylon Fusion spray cans can be used on metal and plastic? Also is it fine if I use a colored base Krylon spray can with another brand for clearcoat as I can't find any Krylon clearcoat in any of the hardware stores in my town. Is it alright to use a spray paint on plastics when it is meant to be used on metal? Which drys faster? Enamel or a laqucer spray paint? I think enamel drys faster but wasn't sure. Is it true that enamal doesn't give as much as a glossy shine to it when it drys compared to a laqucer paint? Last edited by werty316; 10-September-06 at 08:53 PM.. | ||

I believe it's going to be enamel or epoxy paint, it's not going to be laquer unless it states it specifically. http://krylon.com/main/product_templ...roduct_details http://krylon.com/main/product_templ...roduct_details They make it for both plastic and metal, the compounds will be different since the plastic has differnt adhesion properties, and must be a bit more flexible. In automotive apps where you mix your paint, there is a "Flex" additive for rubber to make it not crack when flexed, and paint for plastic is normaly called vinyl die...wich is a bit different compound wise. That being said, it will probably be fine on plastic. as long as you prep the surface well (Sanding and cleaning with a prep cleaner) The days of laquer being more glossy are kinda over with new compounds of todays paint, certainly not enough to worry about, especialy once its clear coated, color sanded and buffed out. Laquer dries faster, it actually looks "Dry" when you spray it, and needs to be sanded and bufed to get it glossy...you can touch laquer 10 minutes after you spray it, and requires 5-20 thin coats, where enamel needs 2-5 medium/thin coats. As for clear, any clear should work, but there can be "Compatibility" issues that can make it lift, check, or craze...it's best to stick with the same brands for max assurance there will be no problems. I haven't painted in 20 years, so my memory may be a bit fuzzy on some of the specifics, but that should be close enough for your concerns.

Actually, the correct term is color sanding. Wet sanding is more commonly used simply because it better describes the action.
