Default Clearcoat on existing paint

Is it possible to put a layer of clearcoat over an existing paintjob?

I am asking because I have screwed up quite a few paintjobs with clearcoat and I dont want to wreck my paint.

This is the case that I want to clearoat. Any suggestions?

My suggestion would be to clean it with some prepsolv or something like a degreaser, and then wetsand with 1500 or so. After that you could clear coat.

How much will wetsanding with 1500 take off?

And another question, what is a good technique for wetsanding? Ive seen it done with running water over the part while sanding or is there a better way?

Thanks for your help

The main reason for the sanding would be to make the surface completely flat before adding more paint. Here is a good link to a paint tutorial. There are also some nice tutorials here on pcapex. When you wetsand, what I do is just pour a little water on your paper (which is already on the sanding block) and sand a few strokes. After that wipe it off with a soft cloth and wet your paper again. You should sand until the paint looks "dull" if you can still see shiny spots then sand those places again.

I would also recommend that if this is your first paint job then practice on something that doesn't matter. It is a lot better to mess up a piece you don't need rather than your case.

This is not my first paintjob, but it is my first one that i hope doesn't look like crap.

Thanks for the rep. Feel free to PM me anytime and you should know that not too long ago I was in your shoes. It just took lots of patience and some research, but I can do a pretty decent paintjob now.
