Default Duplicolor chrome paint

I want a chrome finish on a plastic part that I am building for my case. I was wondering if anyone used it and how are the results.

It worked best for me when I used the duplicolor primer first on the plastic part.

This is true. The best way to get a chrome look is to use chrome tape.

I've found chrome paint to be extremely delicate... like it either never hardens or takes an excessively long time to do so, so after normal setting time, you'll leave huge ugly fingerprints everywhere.

M*LiVVy and musclecars&computers - do you have any pictures you can post?

I understand that it will not look like real chrome but unless professional chroming is way cheaper than what I expect it to be, I think that this is my only option.

There will be plenty of painting going on in my project so I don't care if I need to paint another part with another kind of paint. It seems like I am going to use at least 2 colors plus primer.

Pics of stuff painted with the chrome? I got that same chrome can somewhere I can spray something plastic and take some pics if that'll help.

I used this paint on my mod a while back, but I found it to not be very good. After letting it dry for 3 days so as not to show fingerprints I started to put a clearcoat on it and as soon as the paint touched it it turned grey. I wanted a durable paint job so I tossed it.

What did you do instead? did you find an alternative or did you drop the chrome idea altogether?

Yes, that would be awesome.

My biggest issue is that the part I want to paint is going to be touched a lot - USB ports will be there. I don't care if I need to wait a week for it to dry as long as it does dry eventually.

it won't work for ya then. the paint smudges and the chrome look comes off. it's only works for looks.

I had to drop the idea altogether and go with black.

Exclamation Re: Duplicolor chrome paint

I hate to say it PD but the finish that off-the-shelf Chrome paint gives is generally crap.
It gets tarnished (irreversably) by fingerprints and dulls with time.

On my Refurb case, I used it for a nosecone on my intake fan only because you couldn't see it too bad behind the mirror film and I had to handle it carefully with cotton gloves to prevent it from getting marked.

There are some good metallic finishes - made by Alsacorp, but they require a spray gun or specialist equipment - they cost an arm and a leg though, so they may not fit the bill for you, I don't know

http://alsacorp.com/chrome.htm

The chromeFX stuff is the stuff that those "metallic" fan blades are coated with - looks and feels like chrome
The Mirrachrome seems to come out alright - you just need to add their special clear coat to it

Now what about this.. If he did Metallic chrome then let it dry and did a clearcoat?? Would that protect it enough and it would still have that chrome shine??

Once my buddy comes over i'll have some pic of a fan i did, metallic chrome and metallic red, For ya.
Also a PS cover. Hey i was bored today.

ISTR hearing that clearcoat and many common chrome paints result in ickiness.

You might try the Krylon Chrome. I just did a project with the gold and rubbed it out with Mother's Plastic Polish and the finish was awesom. Took some time and lots of sanding, but the Krylon guarantees dry in 12 minutes and handling in 1hour. I let it go about 5 hours before the real sanding and it worked great with a super hard finish.
