Default Vinyl Dye on Keyboard Letters?

My good friend has a serious affection for SpongeBob SquarePants, so for his birthday, a few of our mutual friends wanted to get him a SpongeBob keyboard that amazon sells, but we realized that it was a really crappy kiddie keyboard. So my packrat friend (Altron on Bit-tech) has like 5 Model-M and is willing to part with one. I'm planning on vinyl dying it yellow and using some stickers or something to Spongebobify it. What I want to know, is that I was reading about vinyl dye and how it preserves most texture and raised lettering when applied properly,

Would it not adhere to the letters on the keyboard so that we could just paint those without masking (that would suck)?

so for HIS birthday...wait, how old is he???

Im pretty sure you can just lay it over the letters, but if you dont want it on the letters you would probably have to mask the keys...i still dont understand your question really...but maybe that answered it.

He's 17...yeah...unhealthy...

It is my understanding that the vinyl dye gets sucked into the plastic, which would allow for the texture to remain intact. But, I'm hoping that the dye won't adhere to the letters since they aren't plastic...maybe allowing me to wipe off the excess dye over the letters keeping them visible...it seems a bit of a stretch, but if all else fails I could end up with a Das Keyboard "SpongeBob Edition"

Well, i dyed my cd player white and it was originally green...the Sony text on the top stayed and the vinyl dye didn't settle on top of the text...it's wierd, it starting make little cracks around the text....i think because it was a little too cold in the garage....it was about 40-50 degrees f when i worked on it.
