| With my old thread disposed of, i wanted to say thanks to insomniac for helping me thru my painting nightmare. Hgoale (spelling sorry) also helped but he saw the thread in the old forum, so thanks to you too! now then, back to a mod related topic, clearcoat. I have 4 coats of gloss black, and im gonna add clearcoat...should i sand with 400 grit, 600 grit, 1500 grit, or 2000 grit? i have all 4 and some rustoleum clear enamel. what oh what should i do? btw, i have a couple dog hairs in the top most coat if that matters. Thanks again! | ||

| As of sanding before clear coat, I've seen some do it and others not. I did it using 600, 1500, and 3200 (Couldn't find 2000) grit. Then I put on the clear coats, repeated the sanding and rubbing compound and hand glazed the sucker. I got a beautiful shine. Insomniac should be able to help you with the details on the sanding, but basically after clearcoating you want to sand until there's no shine (Yea, sounds weird). Then you add the rubbing compound to fix all that sanding, and hand glaze to blind you ![]() | ||

| The dog hair shouldn't be a problem. If you can try to pull them out before sanding, just in case they might cause a scratch (Doubtfull). Sanding will get that right out. I had the luck of one of my eyelashes fall on the paintjob. THEN, because I was inhaling to many fumes, I decided to pull it out then, leaving a small fingerprint and the eyelash still in there. Sanding got rid of it perfectly, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. ![]() | ||

| I am glad you got the help you needed. Just wet sand the basecoat with 600 grit wet, use lots of water and I put just a drop or two of cleaner (409, or simple green etc. ), for lubricant and to help keep the sandpaper from clogging up. Use a sanding block, so you will take the dirt nib tops off and the hair and such out of it without removing too much of the base coat. After your clear is dry, wet sand ...... actually read my how to It covers the rubout process. Have fun, I enjoy rubbing them flat and putting on the high shine the best. Hope this helps | ||
