| I used flat blue color and clear coated. This gives a much shinnier surface if done correctly. Now for the black, since most of the front bezel was black anyways and all I had to paint was my drives, I needed to use Vinyl Dye to get it to match closely. For that all I did was spray this Vinyl dye spray paint on the drives with no clearcoat to give it the flat color. I should have completed pics of my computer either tommorow or the day after. But the clearcoating and rubbing out gives it the true car like finish. With enough clearcoat it will already be glossy, but you'll want to rubout the clearcoat so it's car finish smooth and supa' glossy. | ||

| DW and I where talking about some of that "color changing" paint. You can even get it in aerosal. Comes in a kit with the groundcoat (black paint ), the color changing paint and the clear coat. Dupont makes \ "chromolusion" House of Kolor makes Chameleon and there is some others, but it is about 20 doloars an ounce. BTW it takes about six ounces to paint a mid tower.... been there. It is late and I am medicated, hence the nick and I can't remember the name of the kit now...... but I want to say duocolor, well when I do remember I will update this thread. This paint changes from blue to grean and all shades in between when you move around it, especially when the sun comes into the room. They make the paint in all kinds of different colors and it looks very impressive. It wasn't long ago that us auto body shops was the only ones that could buy it and we could charge plenty for it because it is custom paitn. Now we can buy it in aerosal. Just a thought, but there sure is alot of blue cases out there. | ||

Duplicolor's MIRAGE paint. I've painted 2 cases with it. One blue/red and the 2nd green/silver combo. The red/blue combo would mostly reflect as purple or bronze. Or a weird color like this! The 2nd combo was more of a nasty "swampy marsh" green. I ended up redoing that case in solid color and scored 5 pts to Duplicolor's marketing dept for that one.. As Insomniac stated, its best if the case is ocassionaly in direct sunlight to utilize the effect. Most people I know have their cases in low lit offices so I wouldnt say its great paint for everybody. I also think its way over priced for the amount you get. Since we're talking Duplicolor paints, I'll also share my experience with their new Anodize line of paints. They come in red, yellow and blue. Its similar to a clearcoat and really works it's best when applied over chrome color surfaces like these handles. The more shiney the surface, the better result You can also apply it to non-chrome surfaces by using their "Groundcoat" primer. It applies like a silver metallic paint. Its a poor substitute for a chrome surface if you ask me. I tried the Groundcoat on a dull bronze PC chassis. Since it looks like silver metallic paint, the results are hardly as nice as real chrome. Im sure (or hope) theres a technical reason why Duplicolor uses this instead of a Chome-look paint. The Groundcoat was also very temperamental in how it applied to the surface. 75% of the Ground application resulted in a very corse surface. More corse than a sandable primer. If youre picky like me, Id consider wetsanding the Groundcoat if you want a smooth finish. I personally won't bother using Groundcoat again, I'll strip the part down to its original metal instead. The shine will be more pronounced and eliminate wet sanding. I really loved the results when the paint worked. I must also mention that 2 different cans of the Anodize Blue had leaky spray nozzles. They're using the old style white nozzles. When the anodize paint drips, it leaves bad splotchs. The Anodize also goes on very thin (like clearcoat) over the Groundcoat. It took me 2.5 cans of Anodize to color a mid tower chassis alone. PROS: Works great on chrome. CONS: Nozzles drip Anodize goes on thin Groundcoat not nearly as effective as chrome. mnpctech I haven't posted on pimprig since the old board. I had to re-register to repost.. Did everybody else?

| Thanks for the info man! Maybe if you are interrested in trying it, work on the bronze frame with some Maas or some other metal shiner to get it nice and shiney and use that as the "chrome" base.. might look pretty cool on certain colors? EDIT -- yes, everyone else had to re-register for the forums too. | ||

| Not exactly sure how the chemical properties would effect it, but instead of chrome there is always taking it down to the bare metal and polishing with magnum polish (the white pastey stuff you can pick up at an auto store like Pep Boys or Kragen). It get metal to a mirror finish so long as the surface is smooth. | ||

| mnpctech, have you tried spraying that anodize paint over something plastic that was first painted with a chrome color, such as Krylon's 'Original Chrome'? I was really impressed with the final results of Original Chrome on my plastic 92mm case fan, and was considering doing the side panel exhaust fans (both 80mm) the same way, then finishing off with the red anodize paint...but the directions on the can (and your experiences) made me hesitate. I don't think that Ground Coat would work very well on plastic, and might mess up a previously-chrome-painted part. But maybe, just maybe, the anodize paint would work well on a plastic part that was painted chrome... | ||

No, but I've got Duplicolor chrome and I can try that on a couple plastic fan cages l have no use for. I'll lay the coat down tonight so its got 24hrs to cure before anodizing. Of course, if it does work, that may not neccessarily mean the Krylon will also. Paints are so damn fickle. I'll post the results here tommorow evening. If you do need another fan cause the paint didn't work out, I can give you a deal on a new Panaflo ![]()
