Default Camo Paint

I'm painting an Xbox for a friend of mine, and he wants the top X to have a camo paint job on it. I was just wondering if anybody here had done it before and could maybe give me some tips. What's the easiest way to do it?? Just mask, paint, mask, paint, etc...?

Edit: Here's a little visual for you, in case there was any confusion on what I'm going for.

Think in layers:

Paint the whole thing one of those colors, mask little blobs off after it dries, paint another color... etc etc..

I was planning on using spraypaint, would there be any specific advantage of brush painting?

If its jsut the top you may want to do a skin. I assume you're just painting th "X", since all those little fins are a PITA (esp to cut out). Desert, Urban, Woodland... Plus they have matching controller skins.

I've never been a big fan of skins, but I might consider it for this project. Has anybody here used one before? I read somewhere that it's a pain in the ass to get the bubbles out. Also, are those links the best place to buy?

I'm still keeping painting open as an option too, so suggestions in that area are still welcome. In fact, I'd rather paint if possible.

I was looking around the site on those links, it all looks pretty good. They do car vinyl too, so they know what they're doing. Plus they seem to tout some high gloss protective clear coat that other manufacturers dont have.

Well hand painting wouldn't be as smooth but it would go a lot faster and have more of a "flowing" edge to everything... taping tends to square things off (which is good in a lot of mods)

Throw a camo cloth on it, using Taz's guide.

Aw, you beat me to it. That was my first thought, too..

I've heard of people using skins, too, but I don't think they ever come out quite as well as painting. I guess the cloth would be like a skin, but it'd have a cooler, more authentic "Army" texture.

What Bill did for my computer was photocopy the cammo pattern, tape it onto foamboard, then create three templates, one for each color.

The process is explained with pics here: http://forums.pcapex.com/showthread.php?t=11460&

Good luck.

I have one on my tower, it isn't that hard if you have a squeegee thing for it, or have an extra pair of hands that can help you keep it straight... took me and dgroth about 20 minutes, and 15 of that was him keeping the kids settled down and out of trouble.

I'm not sure if I like the idea of sticking cloth to the Xbox, and right now I'm leaning towards using the skin. It can't be that hard to apply.....As for a squeegee, how about a credit card?

That's usually what you get, a blank card for the squeegee.

i would just mask it and do layers cutting the masking with a razor blade. but then again its plastic so you dont want to dig in. you could also try liquid mask. maybe even brushing then vibrateing the piece (massager, old discected pager, speaker) to settle the paint.

When I was in the army and we had to turn in the tanks for painting, they would just lay cardboard patterns over each layer of paint. Of course the edges were rough.

When I was painting camoflage on my waterjugs for my tank , I found the best thing was to cut up old BDUs', camos', and use them as a template very easy and cheap, you can get them at a surplus store for cheap.
Of course if you do tiger stripes , the edges can be rough.

Yea, but you want a "fuzzy edge" thats were the foamcore comes in. You hold it about 1/4" above the surface in order to achive that fuzzy transition. If you just go and put a template driectly on top, it'll look fake.

But you decide. Just telling you what me an Bill learned over the 5month period that we created my case. And I couln't be more happy with the result.

Yea thats why i GAVE A COUPLE OF OPTIONS. oopps caps, for something close up its up to the creator if they want fuzzy edges or not. If somebody wants the most realistic look I have lots of CARC paint from the army.
