| My next idea includes a mirrors finished painjob with a twist. I've got the mirror finish down to a T, but I don't know about the twist part......this is where my question comes into play. I want to paint a case with a chess/checker board theme. I'm not really sure how I'd go about doing something like that. How would I do that and still be able to rub it out for a mirror finish without it smearing around? Any of you paint pimps got any ideas on this one? Oh yeah, using a rattle can for paint. Probably krylon unless someone's got a better idea... anyone? | ||

| I'm no expert, but perhaps if you painted the whole case black, or white, and then get that to a mirror finish. Wait a long time to let completely harden, and then paint the squares. Or will it still smear afterwards? It'd probably be easiest if you made a stencil. Perhaps you could just take an old gameboard and cut out the red/black squares. | ||

| paint the cae with your checker colors. but use flat colors....then clear over that and use that to rub out smooth. that will give your mirror finish, but make sure you have thick clear....so you dont rub through..... i am no paint expert mind you, but it sounds good to me.... | ||

| Is there any clear-coat that you'd reccomend? is krylon sufficient? are there glossy and dull clear coats? Any mirror finish job that I've ever done has been purely paint, no mirror finish. I tried clearcoating a mirror finish sidepanel (i was experimenting), and it destroyed all of the rubbing that I had been working so hardon. did I just say hardon? wow, damn I'm tired. | ||

| You will need to clear the case. In a situation like this where bomb can is your only option, use lacquer. start with white then tape off your checks, black, then several coats of laquer clear. Make sure you buy some thin tape so it will not leave a real hard edge and it will be less likely to cut through. | ||

| I would first paint the case white, then tape it off and add the black squares. After those are thoughly dry, I would sand the whole non cleared case with say 800 grit wet/dry paper. After you lightly sanded just to get stuff even, clear it. Then after you have the clear on there nice and thick, take some 400 grit wet/dry paper and sand it till its all even. After its all sanded even, just polish it to a mirror finish with this stuff http://www21.3m.com/dr/v2/ec_MAIN.En...P=0&CACHE_ID=0 Then it will be shiney BTW tell me if i missed something............... | ||

As for clear I always use Polyurethane clear. You can get some nice thick coats with it and it wont yellow. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Funny thing is, I have buttoloads of Krylon clearcoat. Every time I a case, I buy a can. I always end up not using it and forgetting about it completely...or just not using it because the paint looks so nice I dun want to fux it up with the clear...which has happened before. I'll try it again though. | ||
