| I'm looking at buying an airbrushing kit this weekend......and since I'm a total airbrushing n00b I was hoping to get some feedback from you pimps about what type of system I should get. I've been doing a lot of painting for myself and friends using good ol' rattle cans and am getting sick of it. My friend that owns a coputer store just offered me a job custom painting cases for the store and there's no way rattle can's are gonna be my weapon of choice. So I obviously plan to use it mostly for painting cases and monitor casings and plan on eventaully getting into pretty detailed murals and other pictures. There's a hobby store just down the street from me thats going out of business and has everything 40% off so I thought what better time to get what I need? Thanks for your help in advance Last edited by Latency; 03-June-04 at 01:00 PM.. | ||

| The Paasche double action VL series is a good all around air brush. And it's easy to find replacement parts for it. It's very good for large areas, and has enough control for fine work with a bit of practice. A color cup is a reasonable alternative to a gravity fed brush. Yet you still have the option to hook up a large bottle for big jobs. For really detailed work a gravity fed Aztec is not a bad choice. Fairly cheap. Iwata also makes some good brushes. The best I've found for minute detail is a Turbo brush like the Paasche AB, these are best left to the expert though. It's a tempermental brush and not suitable for large areas. And it's expensive. | ||

| Paasche double action VL is what I have. Except, when you buy it it doesn't really say VL on the package, instead it just says: "Airbrush Set - Double Action - Internal Mix" - so look for that when buying. It's a good brush, I assume, but I haven't gotten a chance to work with it yet because I need paint. And, I need something to paint... but I'm sure it's a good brush . | ||

| Apex Techie Wannabe | Badger's Anthem Airbrush is a great airbrush, and if you have a Michaels craft store near you, watch for their 50% of coupon in their flyers, and go pick one up from there, thats what I did, it was $100 regularly, and I got it for $50!! Jojo | |

| I used to use Badger 150's but they have trouble shooting the water based acrylics since they are thicker than laquer based. I now use a Iwata Eclipse, i think its the HPC. Go with a gravity feed if you are going to change colors alot and near a sink to clean it between colors otherwise bottom feed is the way to go but pick up some extra bottles. Dimazz, PM if you want to send me that airbrush and have me look at it for you. | ||

| I'm no artist but I seemd to do OK as soon as I started using an airbrush. I paint mainly Radio Control car bodies and I switched from doing basic stripes and such with spray cans to flames, drips, tear aways with no problem. Airbrushes are very easy to use for basic techniques. I've seen guys who can do murals with people and they look almost life like so there is no limit except how well you can transfer the vision in your head to your hand. | ||

| Apex Techie I | One thing people have ofrgotten to mention about the VL, or most airbrushes for that matter. If you want to cover large areas you need the larger needle, nozzle and end cap. If you get an Iwata Eclipse series the bottom feen is the BCS, You dont really need to worry about needles you just play with the airpressure, thickness of paint and distance between the gun and th object your working on. IMO the Iwata guns are far better then any paasche gun or Badger gun. Iwata also has come out with their Revolution series that is a bit cheaper then the others. I personally dont like Badger guns at all, and the difference between Iwata and Paasche is worth the 20 bux. I airbrush for a living so all my info is justified and backed up by my and others I work with's. If your fairly artistic its pretty easy to pick up. | |
