Default General Painting Questions

Alright I have looked through all the guides and still have a few questions

Do you sand self-etching primer?? In the MNPC guide there wasn't a mention of wheter it was sanded or not

has anyone had any experience with duplicolors metalcast anodized paint??

Are there any good guides for the actual wet-sanding part of the painting. I saw the MNPC guide but I am not looking to do a mirror finish so I was wondering how high of grit to go up to and such when sanding the color coat.

Thanks

I've had some experience with the MetalCast line of paints, and none of it was good. However, I've seen other people get nice results. In my case, I tried laying down the special base-coat that is required for Metalcast, that part went fine. But when it came time to spraying the green Metalcast I'd bought, the paint came out very thin and runny, the spray was even spitty. It didn't cover either the base-coated metal or plastic parts evenly, it didn't look a damn thing like the cap either. The final result was absolutely awful. I may never use the product again, even though I've seen others getting much nicer results. I followed the can directions to a "T".

it looks like u didnt use their adhesion promoter. Its a coat u put on top of the ground coat to allow the anondized paint to stick. I think it might be a little too picky for me so I will prob just try to do a nice bright red coat and make sure to have a nice finish on it

That could be, but if the cans didn't recommend it, I didn't do it. I followed the instructions printed on the can label to a "T". In fact, their own instructions are a bit befuddling.

The directions say a groundcoat is only needed for prepainted surfaces, and should not be required for bare metal, or bare sanded metal. The adhesion promoter is only required for chrome or very smooth surfaces. The computer chassis I tried this on was unpainted bare metal, which I'd scuffed up with 400-grit. So according to the directions, no groundcoat OR adhesion promoter should have been needed. Still, I applied the groundcoat just to be safe. The results weren't only limited to bad adhesion, either. The paint was runny and the spray came out of the can spitty (if that's a word, but should give you a good idea what I'm talking about) and inconsistently. It was the same with a can of blue and green Metalcast.

I pulled this from Duplicolor's "Metalcast Tips" on their site:

Quote:
Q. When I spray the METALCAST™ do I need to apply the Adhesion Promoter?

A. Yes, Dupli-Color® Adhesion Promoter (CP199) is recommended when spraying over chrome. In addition, scuff the surface with a red scuff pad before applying the Adhesion Promoter. Allow 15 minutes for the Adhesion Promoter to dry before applying two coats of METALCAST™.

Q. Do I have to use the METALCAST™ Ground Coat on chrome or bare-metal surfaces?

A. No, METALCAST™ Color works best when applied with the CP-199 Adhesion Promoter directly over scuffed chrome-like or bare-metal surfaces. The METALCAST™ Groundcoat is recommended for pre-painted surfaces only.

So, the directions seem to be a little unclear, at best. I might have to try it again with adhesion promoter, just for kicks, and see what happens...even though it's not suggested for use on bare metal, only on smooth surfaces like chrome.

yea I had emailed with them back and forth a bit and they said the adhesion promoter was highly reccommended so that must have been it...

I think i am just going to use their SUV paint and really rub the clear coat well to give it some shine

Thats the one with the odd red spray tip right? I took off the red piece and it was very spitty. I thought that it was just a cap.

I replaced the red piece and it painted very evenly, though I still didn't get good results with the final finish.

I can't remember, that was almost 3 years ago...anyway, even though I've seen other people get nice results with that paint, it really didn't live up to my expectations, and is a very finicky paint to work with.
